The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Brave the creepy facade of a once-glorious hotel for a jolt back in time. Board a phantom elevator, shoot up 13 storeys and brace yourself for a thrilling plummet... but beware! The experience just got scarier. You rocket back up, only to plummet down yet again. You dare to ride once more, but wait! That's not what happened before. That's right, now the Tower is in control, so it's never the same fear twice!
The ride is themed to resemble the fictional Hollywood Tower Hotel. The storyline of the ride is that on October 31, 1939, the hotel was struck by lightning, transporting an elevator car full of passengers to the Twilight Zone. The exterior of the ride resembles an old hotel with a blackened scorch mark across the front of the facade where the lightning destroyed part of the building.
Guests embark upon an eerie journey through a deserted Hollywood Hotel where they visit the lobby, the library (to view Rod Serling on television), and the boiler room. The adventure culminates with a 13-story drop in a runaway 1917 caged service elevator in which guests take a death-defying, high-speed plunge.
All of the cast members wear a costume that resembles that of a 1930s bellhop. At over $1000 per uniform, it is the most expensive costume in the Disney theme parks.

Hidden Mickeys
- Images of Mickey Mouse have been hidden throughout the attraction. During the entire show, the little girl is holding a MICKEY MOUSE doll.
- look for the ears in the balcony railing just before you enter the building
- look for the water stain on the wall in the boiler room.
- A reference to Mickey can also be seen in sheet music in the Echo Library which is a copy of actual music written in the 1930s (titled, "no mickey mouse? what kind of party is this?").
- In the Fifth Dimension scene on the Foxtrot side, the swirling stars form a Hidden Mickey just before they disappear.
Secrets
- On the directory in The Hollywood Tower Hotel lobby, some of the letters that have fallen off spell "evil Tower U R doomed".
- The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was actually struck by lightning during construction.
- By the concierge desk in the hotel lobby, there is a 13-diamond award. In reality, it only goes up to 5.
- Room 259 in the Tower of Terror is the motor room. It is room 259 because it is 259ft above water level.
- The Hollywood Tower Hotel was established in 1917.
- The luggage in the lobby is a complete set made from genuine alligator skin.
- There is a dummy room near the top of the hotel. At night you can see a light in the window where there looks like there is a room. It's really just a light but no real room.
- There are several different drop profiles, the computer only selects the one you get when the ride vehicle clicks into place in the drop shaft. The computer is programmed to give an equal number of each profile, each hour.
- The exterior of the Tower of Terror was designed to match the buildings in the Morrocco pavilion at Epcot because Tower of Terror is visible from EPCOT's World Showcase, directly in-line with the Morrocco pavilion.
- If you look below the screens that show your photos at the end of the ride, there is a bunch of memorabilia from Twilight Zone episodes, like the little toy telephone from an episode called "Long Distance."
- Disney Imagineers calculated that if both towers were to drop at the same time that Rock 'n' Roller Coaster launched it would bring down the Studio's power grid. To prevent this the Imagineering department decided to build a power sub-station that services just this section of the park.
- It is the third tallest attraction (199 ft) at the Walt Disney World Resort (Expedition Everest is half a foot taller, and the wand decorating Spaceship Earth adds 41 ft to that 180 ft tall attraction). The Tower of Terror is 199 feet high at Walt Disney World because of FAA regulations that require a fixed red light beacon to be added to the top of any 200 ft or taller building. Imagineers thought that the beacon would take away from the hotel's 1939 theme.
Scripts that are heard throughout the experience:
Message heard before entering the Library:
"Ladies and gentlemen, in just a few moments, the library doors in front of you will be opening. Please stand back from the doors as they will be opening toward you. Thank you."
Library Spiel by Rod Serling & voice actor:
"You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of sound. A dimension of sight. A dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into...The Twilight Zone. Hollywood, 1939. Amid the glitz and the glitter of a bustling, young movie town at the height of its golden age, The Hollywood Tower Hotel was a star in its own right; a beacon for the show business elite. Now, something is about to happen that will change all that. The time is now on an evening very much like the one we have just witnessed. Tonight's story on The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction. This, as you may recognize, is a maintenance service elevator still in operation, waiting for you. We invite you, if you dare, to step aboard because in tonight's episode, you are the star. And this elevator travels directly to - The Twilight Zone."
Heard after you get into the elevator:
"You are the passengers on a most uncommon elevator about to ascend into your very own episode of...The Twilight Zone. One stormy night long ago, five people stepped through the door of an elevator and into a nightmare. That door is opening once again, and this time it's opening for you. "
Heard just before you begin dropping:
"You are about to discover what lies beyond the fifth dimension...beyond the deepest, darkest corner of the imagination...in the Tower of Terror. "
Heard after drop sequence:
"A warm welcome back to those of you who made it and a friendly word of warning; something you won't find in any guidebook. The next time you check into a deserted hotel on the dark side of Hollywood, make sure you know just what kind of vacancy you're filling. Or you may find yourself a permanent resident of...The Twilight Zone"
Heard as you're waiting for seat belts to unlock:
"Ladies and gentlemen, please gather your belongings and watch your head and step as you exit through the elevator doors. We trust your stay at The Hollywood Tower Hotel has been a pleasant one, and please do come back and see us again. Thank you."
