Notices

inline imageUnless you have visited Florida around May or September time, you may not have seen these weird creatures that even fly whilst joined together.

Love bugs (also known as March Flies) are a small black fly with a red spot behind the head. Males are only about 1/4" long (6mm), and the females are only slightly bigger, 1/2" inch (12mm) long.

Their name comes from the fact that they mate while airborne, and you'll rarely see a lone love bug. The larger females fly forward, dragging their tiny partner backward through the air.

Love Bugs can be annoying but are absolutely harmless

  • They do not Bite
  • They do not Sting
  • They do not spread diseases
  • They do not Buzz, Click or even Hum
They emerge in the spring and fall (usually May and September), although this can vary by a few weeks earlier or later. The total "season" lasts 3-5 weeks.

They are most active in the mid-morning and just before nightfall.

The main annoyance of these bugs is to drivers as they can swarm in great numbers and can make a mess on car windshields so much so that in extreme cases you may have to stop to clear the windscreen.

Avoid turning on windshield wipers. This will just create a slurry of bug parts.

On highways, windshields, hoods and grills can become thickly coated with dead love bugs in minutes. Services plazas on Florida’s Turnpike have washers for helping motorists clear their cars. If left in place for a few days, the bug goo can mar a vehicle’s paint.
