Maingate Lakeside Resort (Formosa Gardens)
This hotel is suitably located along the 192 and simple to find from both the airport and areas such as Universal Studios, Seaworld and Walt Disney World. We had read many bad reviews on other websites but do not let this put you off. Upon arrival we were allocated a room there and then - you are free to request a lakeside view room for example, at your leisure. The standard size room for this hotel contains two double beds, a safe, a fridge/freezer and wi-fi as well as the usuals you would expect such as a shower. It costs a small amount (roughly $6 per day) to upgrade to a room with a kingsize bed for example. The room itself although a little outdated is warm and inviting, as well as clean and smelling fresh and therefore, ideal as a room to rest your head at night! The hotel has two laundry rooms and we found the price of this to be very cheap - we paid around $3 to wash and dry all of our clothes and the washing machines are industrial size so you would be able to fit the entire families clothes in there! The hotel has a range of swimming pools that are all heated. We had a room that was in an extremely good location to the pool so we spent one morning down there. The pool also has a poolside snack cabana that serves alcohol later in the day. We found this cabana to be well stocked, reasonably priced and the service friendly. The pool was very good and clean and although there are no lifeguards on duty, I feel this was not an issue as all of the sun loungers where parents would sit for example, are literally next to the swimming pool. We returned to the pool area late one evening to find that the resort were showing movies outside and it was a very calm and relaxed atmosphere. You could also purchase bevarages from the poolside cabana. The hotel has a small shop, a bar serving dinner type meals and a breakfast buffet. The breakfast buffet is nice, although slightly overpriced when you can go to places such as Denny's, IHOP or Golden Corral as they are a stones throw away. We never ate at their bar/diner (Hurricane Sams) but from the impression we got, it looked very warm and inviting. We purchased a few items in their small shop and had no problems. However, some of their items are over priced so it is recommended you go to the Walgreens over the road. When staying at this hotel, you have the opportunity to use their shuttle services (free) to all of the Disney Parks. Although the times were inconvienient for us, they may not be for other people, especially non drivers. You also had the option of privately hiring a taxi in the lobby who would 'stay with you' so to speak throughout your holiday whenever you needed picking up. I believe this service was run by a company called Mears and you could always find them in the hotel lobby. The departure times for the shuttle bus are as follows: 7.30am - Seaworld and Universal Studios 9.25am - Animal Kingdom 10.10am - Magic Kingom (ticket and transportation center) 11.45am - Hollywood Studios and Epcot 5.00pm - Magic Kingdom (ticket and transportation center) The return times are as follows: 5.15pm - Magic Kingdom (Lane 71) 5.20 pm - Animal Kingdom (Lane 51) 5.30pm - Epcot (Lane 18) 7.30pm - Universal Studios (Lane 85) 7.45pm - Seaworld (Green Canopy) 9.00pm - Hollywood Sutdios (Lane 41) 9.35pm - Epcot (Lane 18) 10.45pm - Magic Kingdom (Lane 71) 11.30pm - Magic Kingdom (Lane 71) - ONLY if Magic Kingdom closes at midnight or later Finally, this hotel is very close (in walking distance) to restaurants such as TGI Fridays, Outback Steakhouse, Longhorns Steakhouse and Bahama Breeze. It is also in walking distance to buffet style places such as Golden Corral, Sizzlers and Angels. There is an ample supply of bargain gift shops both next to, and nearby to, the resort and I feel this would be very useful for guests who did not hire a car. Overall, I would recommend this hotel as a cosy place to stay with warm and friendly staff. If you are looking for a hotel where you can relax and chill out constantly, I would not choose this one as it can get quite rowdy during the evening due to the size of the complex and the numbers of guests they can accomodate. However, if you are looking for a good quality, budget hotel with all the amenities you require for a basic stay, as well as being in a fantastic location, look no further! Digg
