The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Brave the creepy facade of a once-glorious hotel for a jolt back in time. Board a phantom elevator, shoot up 13 storeys and brace yourself for a thrilling plummet... but beware! The experience just got scarier. You rocket back up, only to plummet down yet again. You dare to ride once more, but wait! That's not what happened before. That's right, now the Tower is in control, so it's never the same fear twice!

The ride is themed to resemble the fictional Hollywood Tower Hotel. The storyline of the ride is that on October 31, 1939, the hotel was struck by lightning, transporting an elevator car full of passengers to the Twilight Zone. The exterior of the ride resembles an old hotel with a blackened scorch mark across the front of the facade where the lightning destroyed part of the building.

Guests embark upon an eerie journey through a deserted Hollywood Hotel where they visit the lobby, the library (to view Rod Serling on television), and the boiler room. The adventure culminates with a 13-story drop in a runaway 1917 caged service elevator in which guests take a death-defying, high-speed plunge.

All of the cast members wear a costume that resembles that of a 1930s bellhop. At over $1000 per uniform, it is the most expensive costume in the Disney theme parks.
  • The entrance to the ride is on the first floor and the exit is in the basement.
  • Ride System: Elevator car
  • Capacity: 22 per elevator car
  • Height: 199 feet tall
  • Top Speed: 39mph
  • Build Cost: $140 million

For safety, you should be in good health & free from high blood pressure, heart, back, or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride.

As from the 12th August 2014 the Tower of Terror now has on-ride video for guests who have a MagicBand with a linked Memory Maker account. This is the first attraction at Walt Disney World to offer on-ride videos as part of the new MyMagic+ system. Within 24hrs of riding, guests can see their online videos at My Disney Experience.

Hidden Mickeys

  • Images of Mickey Mouse have been hidden throughout the attraction. During the entire show, the little girl is holding a MICKEY MOUSE doll.
  • look for the ears in the balcony railing just before you enter the building
  • look for the water stain on the wall in the boiler room.
  • A reference to Mickey can also be seen in sheet music in the Echo Library which is a copy of actual music written in the 1930s (titled, "no mickey mouse? what kind of party is this?").
  • In the Fifth Dimension scene on the Foxtrot side, the swirling stars form a Hidden Mickey just before they disappear.

Secrets

  1. The original concept was for the tower of terror to be an actual working hotel with the ride experience being part of it, but this proved to be too impracticable.
  2. The tower of terror is made from over 1500 tons of steel along with over 145,000 cubic feet of concrete and the roof area is tiled with 27,000 tiles.
  3. The tower of terror stands at a height of 199 feet, the building was designed for this specific height to avoid having to put a red flashing light on top. At 200 feet the Federal Aviation Authority requires a red flashing light.
  4. The small girl who appears in some scenes on the Tower of Terror holds a vintage Mickey Mouse doll from the 1930s
  5. When the elevator plummets down the lift shaft you aren't actually free falling, you are actually being pulled downwards by two enormous motors at a speed greater than if you were actually free falling.
  6. On the directory in The Hollywood Tower Hotel lobby, some of the letters that have fallen off spell 'evil Tower U R doomed'.
  7. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was actually struck by lightning during construction.
  8. The Build cost was $140 milllion
  9. By the concierge desk in the lobby there is an award showing 13 diamonds, in reality hotel diamond rewards only goes up to 5 diamonds.
  10. Room 259 in the Tower of Terror is the motor room. It is room 259 because it is 259ft above water level.
  11. The luggage in the lobby is a complete set made from genuine alligator skin.
  12. There is a dummy room near the top of the hotel. At night you can see a light in the window where there looks like there is a room. It's really just a light but no real room.
  13. There are several different drop profiles, the computer only selects the one you get when the ride vehicle clicks into place in the drop shaft. The computer is programmed to give an equal number of each profile, each hour.
  14. The exterior of the Tower of Terror was designed to match the buildings in the Morrocco pavilion at Epcot because Tower of Terror is visible from EPCOT's World Showcase, directly in-line with the Morrocco pavilion.
  15. Disney Imagineers calculated that if both towers were to drop at the same time that Rock 'n' Roller Coaster launched it would bring down the Studio's power grid. To prevent this the Imagineering department decided to build a power sub-station that services just this section of the park.
Scripts that are heard throughout the experience:

Message heard before entering the Library:
"Ladies and gentlemen, in just a few moments, the library doors in front of you will be opening. Please stand back from the doors as they will be opening toward you. Thank you."

Library Spiel by Rod Serling & voice actor:
"You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of sound. A dimension of sight. A dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into...The Twilight Zone. Hollywood, 1939. Amid the glitz and the glitter of a bustling, young movie town at the height of its golden age, The Hollywood Tower Hotel was a star in its own right; a beacon for the show business elite. Now, something is about to happen that will change all that. The time is now on an evening very much like the one we have just witnessed. Tonight's story on The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction. This, as you may recognize, is a maintenance service elevator still in operation, waiting for you. We invite you, if you dare, to step aboard because in tonight's episode, you are the star. And this elevator travels directly to - The Twilight Zone."

Heard after you get into the elevator:
"You are the passengers on a most uncommon elevator about to ascend into your very own episode of...The Twilight Zone. One stormy night long ago, five people stepped through the door of an elevator and into a nightmare. That door is opening once again, and this time it's opening for you. "

Heard just before you begin dropping:
"You are about to discover what lies beyond the fifth dimension...beyond the deepest, darkest corner of the imagination...in the Tower of Terror. "

Heard after drop sequence:
"A warm welcome back to those of you who made it and a friendly word of warning; something you won't find in any guidebook. The next time you check into a deserted hotel on the dark side of Hollywood, make sure you know just what kind of vacancy you're filling. Or you may find yourself a permanent resident of...The Twilight Zone"

Heard as you're waiting for seat belts to unlock:
"Ladies and gentlemen, please gather your belongings and watch your head and step as you exit through the elevator doors. We trust your stay at The Hollywood Tower Hotel has been a pleasant one, and please do come back and see us again. Thank you."
