View Full Version : Autistic children - using 'social stories'?
Hi guys,
For my research project next year I am hopefully going to be working with a school and writing some social stories to benefit thier children with ASD and help aid thier social understanding - I know a few members on here have children with ASD and I was wondering if any of your children have had 'social stories' written for them (by a school, speech therapist etc) to i.e - tackle problem behaviour or prepare them for an event etc? and if so, did you find these beneficial for your child?
any comments would be greatly appreciated - dont worry, this isnt anything official by the way ;) its just me being 'interested thats all :)

Hi Faye
I work with a number of Autistic children and have found the use of social stories very helpful, even though I was doubtful at first! We have one young man living with us Mon - Fri at the moment due to crisis situations at home. He was refusing point blank to come in, until he read his social story explaining the reasons and how it would work, eg, he would still see his family at the weekends. He was then extremely accepting. I have since been on social story training (and it is much more complex than I realised!) and it is a technique I hope to use with other young people. I would always use it with a combination of other techniques, to meet the needs of each individual, such as visual planners etc. If I can help you with anything else, feel free to PM me.

Social stories are used widely at DS & DD school. DD was terrified of going in lifts and a social story about lifts really helped her. She is still nervous but knows what will happen and why she needs to use them.

DS2 had a social story for going to school in a mini bus and walking to the classroom through school. This really helped him as this was a very difficult transition for him to cope with. He has photos in his story as well as words to help him.
Please feel free to PM me if you need any further help.

I've registered on this board to look this up. I've just had a trainee EP write my son a social story about getting organised for school, something he doesn't do and he's started secondary school next year (returning to mainstream from a specialised speech and language unit). I'm still waiting for her to post it to me. We're also in the process of getting him diagnosed with ASD. Looked things up on the web but feel a little apprehensive about having a go myself. Was told noticeable improvements within a short time so thinking about the next area of his problems we can work on next.
I work in a school for autistic children. we use social stories for the pupils, and they respond well to the individual story. If it is a behavioral story, it does help them understand. we go over the story with the pupil and this can happen a number of times a day, depending on whether they need to.

Hi, my son has only used a social story once, and this was because he went through a phase of destroying my younger sons ellaborate knex models. We did a story with photos showing our younger sons happy face with his knex model and then a really sad face with a broken knex model and so on. It worked really well, because at the time my autistic son had very little language or comprehension and the visual aid of the social story just put those pictures in his head so he realised the effect of what he was doing. It took a little while but it did work in the end.

Finally, after a three week wait got the social story for organising himself for my son from the trainee EP. Have to say Ashley looked at it for the first time and didn't seem very impressed. His has an excellent reading ability and to him seemed very babyish in its language, but we'll see over the next few weeks how it works. Trouble is it was based on getting ready for school which he will be doing for the next four days only so I will adapt it for trips out in the holidays. Report back later, in the Autumn term if its made a difference.
