View Full Version : Anyone bought prescription glasses in Florida?
I have recently had my eyes tested and wondered if it would be worth having a look round while in Orlando for new glasses?
I have noticed a few opticians in the Florida Mall.
Has anyone done this?
Thanks Lynn

We got ours from Wal Mart up on HW 27 saved around £400 on his and hers glasses took around 10 days so make it one of the first things you do when you arrive :d:

When you say you saved £400 on his n her glasses....what would the cost have been in the UK.
I'm keen on saving where possible..but need an idea of the actual %age I'd potentially save.
Thanks
Mike
There are also plenty of one-hour eye glass stores where you order them when you go to the mall and pick them up when you leave. They can make them up from your prescription.

This is a really interesting thread as I have been wondering this myself for a number of years. Due to have my eyes tested in August, so might take my presription with me.
Thanks - Heather

I personally haven't bought glasses over there but my Mum did and she thought they were a lot cheaper.
What glasses/lenses did you get Dave & Kellie to save that much!

Frames with sunglasses with magnetic clip on match the main frame for both of us this was the biggest saving on UK prices from memory.
For me varifocals much thinner than the UK
For Kellie thin lenses glasses much thinner than the UK
Strange but after a year no serious scratches unlike UK glasses we have had in the past

This is really interesting.
A couple of Qs
1) How much approx to have your eyes tested in US
2) Should I have them tested here and take my prescription?
3)Should I go to the opticians over there at the beginning of the holiday in case they wouldn't be ready in time before departure

Well that's really going some, unless you were being hugely overcharged in the first place. A month ago I got the thinest, lightest varifocals available - Essilor Varilux Panamic, thin & light 1.74 with Crizal Alize coating - for £250 with frame from Specsavers.
I've just come back from the US and I asked in a couple of places in malls and they (like UK opticians) wouldn't give a definite price but one place said $800 and another said $1000. I gather that most people in the US have a lot of the cost paid by health insurance.
You can buy 'simple' single vision glasses in the UK now from online sellers from about £15, but anything complicated and the price rockets. Frames are a huge rip-off - I read that there's only a very small number of manufacturers of frames and the factory cost is next to nothing - literally a couple of pounds.

I just thought i would add to my previous posting about our glasses from walmart, We checked at Specsavers and our local opticians we were told that they did not yet stock the particular glasses that we were after, ie clip-on/magnetic sunglasses. We went to Boots and they had them in stock but at that time they were new into the UK so they were quite expensive approx £250.00 a frame plus lenses. We paid approx $600.00 in the states for 2 pairs of glasses approx £330.00. we were given a definate price not an approx price before we put in our order. After we checked out walmart there was no need to look elsewhere and it seemed a reasonable price to us.
The glasses are a very good quality not flimsy, even our local optician said they were a good pair and he said hopefully he would stock them in the fuure.
The lenses also have not scratched as easily as those bought from specsavers and vision express.
The best advice we can give (as we have been through it) is to get your eyes tested here in the UK, price up the glasses (inlc lenses) here then finally go to an outlet such as walmart and see if you can find yourself a bargain.
