A quick question from DD.
Can you buy PAL format DVD's in Florida, if so who sells them?
Thanks.

Hi
I don't know if PAl dvd's are widely available but we bought a Mr & Mrs Smith dvd back in dec and it works on our cheap dvd player. I think we still have the DVD if you want to try it on your DVD player before buying any in America. Just pm your address and i'll sent it next week if we have still got it.

DVDs are not PAL or NTSC but region coded so you need a multi region player for DVD bought in the US
ASDA do them for about £30

The DVD I bought from Walmart says NTSC on it and region 1 but it works on our cheap DVD player from Aldi.

most cheap DVD players are region free
as they dont pay the license to make it "region'ed" AND they want to sell the same product worldwide without making changes to the said item

BUT haveing said this, some of the older TV's dont play NTSC (or if they do its in black and white)
most TV that are less that 10 yeays old play though

The main issue with US bought DVDs is the region coding. Most TVs and DVDs in the UK bought in the last 10 years should be able to handle NTSC. All you need is a multi region DVD player, but some DVDs are Region Code Enhanced, which is intended to stop region 1's from playing in a multi region player. However on a trip to Georgia 2 years ago, we bought quite a few DVDs including RCE ones, which all play OK in our various Sony multi region players.

If you have a PC with a DVD recorder you could make a "backup" copy of it and remove the region code.

You're wrong. DVD's most certainly are PAL or NTSC. However, the vast majority of DVD players sold in the UK in the last 5 years will happily play both.

OK, this may help, not sure
I have 'Mona Lisa Smile, on DVD, bought UK, it is PAL reg 2, plays in all our machines.
Yet on the other hand, i have, The Prince and Me, on DVD, bought Florida last year, NTSC region 1, will only play in our cheap player, NOT on the multi region.
Oh, and both of them play on my laptop!
Hope that helps.
