A fabulous place. If you can spend the night there aswell, I would. There's alot to do in just one day. Now, where should I start?
Make sure you do the train hop on hop off ride. The tickets are valid for 3 days and you just get on and off where it suits. The drivers are all really well informed and funny. Once you've done the whole circuit, you'll know where best to jump off. Must look at Flagler College (largest collection of original Tiffany stained glass windows in US). Lightner Museum, Casa Monica Hotel, San Sebastian Winery, cruise around Matanzas Bay, lunch or dinner at Harrys or A1 Ale House, or Barnacle Bills or drive out to the beach for a sunset dinner at The Reef (am I selling it yet?)
Do the history tour (Ponce de Leon) St Augustine lighthouse, Alligator farm.
Snack and beer at Scarlett O'Hara's.
Ripleys Beleive it or Not, Ghost Train ride at night, or haunted St Augustine walk. Castillo San Marco, Bridge of Lions (although Lions are missing at the moment!), Home of Florida National Guard. Oldest School house, best Ice Creams around.
Every year we spend 5 or 6 days here during our Florida vacation, so can't be that bad! If you like, I can e mail you some pictures? There might be some in my gallery, I'll have a look and put some in.
Hope that's helped.

About 2 to 2 and a half hours, but if you have time to spare on the way back, try the 1A coastal road, much prettier than the main roads, but then cut across to Orlando once you've taken in Daytona Beach.

Had a really good two days/one night in St Augustine and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to see a bit of Fla away from the parks etc. Stayed at the Penny Farthing Inn which was very comfortable and homely- plus a free bar! Also had one of our best meals ever at Zaharias Restaurant- ridiculously good value. Go and visit you won't regret it. Superb beach too.
