Has anyone else, who has been more than once, noticed that there has been an increase in the number of Disney CM's in the senior citizen category??
We did last year, at the turnstiles and in desk jobs - I suppose it is ideal considering the average age of a Florida person - a huge number retire there don't they?
Who is for 2 days Disney CM and the rest in semi-retirement then?:thumbs-up

Yeah Sue....we noticed a lot more wrinklies too....same in Sea World....I think it's great though that they don't put their older people on the scrapheap like they do here...if they're still able...why shouldn't they be out there ...give me a litter scooper upper thingy and I'd volunteer to go work in the parks...

Count me in when I retire as long as I can work in an airconditioned shop or restaurant!

I think its great older people are often more dedicated to their job. My nana would have made a great CM she loved children and would have entertained them all day.

Florida is the state where many US citizens go to retire. When they get there after a period they get themselves a job and most of the jobs are at the parks. One of the main reasons for working there are the health benefits.

We know a few people who had major jobs before retirement but who are now doing typical Disney jobs and in the main enjoying it.

We were told by an ex-Disney employee that the much touted health and dental benefits, only apply to full time employees and many of the CM's are employed seasonally and/or part-time only. Hence they have to look for extra work at quiet times of year (waitressing etc)

We noticed this year but only thought that we had ignored it previously. Well Florida is called by some 'Hevans waiting Room'!

Yes noticed it last year too.
The delivery of the Disney "magic" is part of a non ageist organisation.

The reason they employ so many seniors is that most of them need money due to high medical costs, low pensions, and just to get out as they feel lonely after moving so far from home to Florida and their partner dieing. Some of them are great but I had to complain a couple of years ago about a nasty old bag on the turnstiles she was vile and nasty and you could see she hated kids and people in general.
Orlando has such a low unemployment rate it's hard for Disney to get staff they have to do roadshows at retirement homes, trailer parks, colleges and just about anywhere to try and get staff

Add to that the fact that the pay and conditions for the seasonal staff or those doing the less desirable jobs isn't fantastic...

Whilst waiting for what seemed like hours for my DH and DS to go on r&r coaster I got talking to a cast member and she told me that retired people from other parts of America come to live and work there for the summer and Autumn and go home for the winter with a bit of extra money.:cool2: I would love to do that, dont suppose I can retire at 40.:)

 Hi all

I would definatly be up for retiring to Florida, DEF, but HOW do they get the green card??????????????????????

My husband and I looked into emigrating to the USA but the entry restrictions are sooo tough! My grandparents are American citizens and live in Pasadena, Texas and even they cannot be classed as our sponsors as it is not an "immediate" relative, my mam could go then I would have to follow her! But I'm afraid she ain't budging!!

One dear old chap sold me a bottle of water in MK last year on a little refreshment stall, and he loved his job, he was soo contented and delighted to be selling water for Disney, bless him!

I guess most are already US residents but from other states. Personally I don't hear of many UK citizens retiring to the US, usually it's Spain or Australia. I'm not sure if the green card process gets much easier when you retire, and I think you'd have to have a good pension as you wouldn't be entitled to one in the US (someone correct me if i'm wrong?!)
