I have hears that the sales the day after Thanksgiving are called black friday. Are they really as good as people are saying? i have also been told that they are only between the hours of 6am - 12pm. Although i enjoy getting a bargain not sure i want to get up that early to go shopping.

I haven't been, but I have a number of friends in the US, quiet a few of them LOVE this sale, they say it is the best one of the year iof that helps. They also but also tat they have to get up early to get the bargins. So, if you do go, its an early moorning and y0ou need to plan where you are going.
I'm sure someone else will come along that has experience.

The good stuff goes in a hearbeat and the stores are CROWDED like you never thought possible, my sister said people were arriving by the van load and leaving with as many bags as a human could carry in one go :)
She actually saw some of the stuff she had bought the previous week more expensive as well so not always better prices!!

We were in NYC for Black Friday (the Friday after thanksgiving) and yes there were some good sales. Plenty of entertainment too with the news coverage.
It's called Black Friday as it's when businesses finally get into the black in the financial year.
It's also considered the official start to the holiday season!
Interesting though is the more modern developement of Cyber Monday! The first Monday after Thanksgiving, when the holiday season online shopping starts!:spin:

The TV stations tend to be at the big Malls and they spend the day before telling you which Malls are opening and at what times Last year some where open at 4am and had queues outside all night.

I love shopping and grabbing a bargain but I couldn't be bothered to face the crowds and get up so early and at the end of the day I usually think that most things I buy whilst in Orlando are bargains.

Make sure that you pick up and Orlando Sentinel on Thursday as the sales papers for Friday will be there. Lots of times there are additional coupons in these papers. Nearly all of the stores open early (some even at 6:00 & 7:00) and most stay open late. It is the biggest shopping day of the year for Americans and can be a bit overwhelming at times.
Great fun and great bargains to be had!

....don't forget to bring your passport and shop at Macy's where you can get a discount (in addition to sales).

As far as I know the discount is 15% off of your purchase and is taken at the till. They have a barcode to scan (they have a folder at the till) and there is one for the UK and one for Germany (assuming whole of Europe though).
Certainly worth it and especially on sale days.
*Note: This question has made me curious if the discount is still valid. A spouse of a coworker of mine is a manager at a local store and she is inquiring about this. Once I receive her response I will update the thread.

I just confirmed that this offer is still valid (however the discount might be 10% and not 15%). Take your passport to the gift wrap/customer service area and they will give you a special shoppers card. Show this card when you are at the till and they will apply the additional discount to your purchase.
Well worth getting the card as it will basically cover the local tax and then an additional percentage off.
Happy shopping!

I always use the Macys discount - 11% is the discount I've always received. Some package tour operators supply a discount cards but if they don't you just go to the customer service desk upstairs with your passport and they will issue you one - you just write your name and address on a list.
Bear in mind that not all products are included, Clinique is definitely not and there some others too.
I had a 10% one for Nordstrum last year, but it has now run out so will see if they are still issuing too.

Another thing that might be worth mentioning is that a lot of resorts have newspapers with the sales flyers excluded. On Thanksgiving Day the paper will probably be a minimum of 3 inches thick. Most of that will be sales flyers. If your resort only offers the 'news only' version drop by a petrol station and by a complete paper. Grocery stores, petrol stations, Walgreens, etc. places such as these all have newspapers.
The sales flyers will note the special opening times so this will help as well. Often times they will have a special discount during the early hours so getting a early start often pays off.
Also, they usually have some major bargain buys and each store only carries a few of these items. Don't be surprised if you go mid morning or mid day to find that they are sold out. The 'real' shoppers are there when they unlock the door and head straight for the item.
Boxing Day is just as crazy....50% off all holiday items. Who knew shopping was such an art!
