We have stayed at the hard rock at universal several times and think its fabulous , the hotel is very smart but has a casual relaxed feel to it imho would recomend it
Never stayed on site with Disney so can,t help there
Chris
We have stayed at Wilderness Lodge twice already and are back for a third time at Xmas - so obviously we would recommend this one. We are also trying the Yacht Club for the first time, we were impressed when we had a brief look around last year and think it's location, between MGM and Epcot, plus opposite the Boardwalk is just perfect.
We picked the Royal Pacific at Universal, mainly because it was the cheapeat and we are spending enough already lol - but it does get really goos reviews as well.
Ooops sorry - missed the moderate bit!!
We didn't like our one stay in a moderate (Coronado Springs) that's why we go deluxe when we can and offsite in an apartment when money is tighter.

I loved the theming of Royal Pacific, but found the breakfast choices a bit limited for our fussy kid, so next year we are trying Hard Rock Hotel.
Moderates, I do love the theming of Coronado Springs, but have not stayed there.
We have stayed at both Hard Rock and Royal Pacific, and we loved the Hard Rock the best, it's pool is fantastic and there is a small shop where you can buy terrific ice cream, and they also sell pastries etc for breakfast, so that is handy.
For Disney moderates, we have stayed in both Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter, and prefer the French Quarter - we are going back in 3 days - can't wait! The FQ is a much smaller resort, so less walking to/from the room for buses/food court/pool etc. Also, these two resorts share buses, and they pick up first at FQ, so you have more chance of a seat, and then coming back from the parks, they drop off first at FQ, so you win both ways. There is no sit-down restaurant at the FQ though, but you can walk down the river path to Riverside if you wanted a sit down meal, also Riverside has boats and bikes to hire as well.
Hope this helps in your decision. :D
Royal Pacific is the cheapest of the universal hotels and is lovely, but like Cinders Mum says, the food wasn't great for us either (although we did like the breakfast buffet), however, we just went and ate at Hard Rock and offsite restaurants. Out of the moderates I loved Port Orleans French Quarter for it's small size and the boat to DTD, but I also loved Coronado Springs for it's theming and facilities, plus the bus service was the best I've ever had (buses were nearly always empty or half full as alot of guests were on conventions).
Definately love the Hard Rock Hotel, love the 'cool' factor and the pool, and the Velvet Lounge for cocktails....and if you want to splash out eat at the Palm...mmmmmmm:)

Hi, I have just come back from 2 weeks at Port Orleans Riverside and 3 nights at Portofino Bay at Universal and both were great. Riverside is really peaceful and you would not know you were at Disney. Whilst I did enjoy it I dont know that I would go back there after looking round some of the Deluxe resorts such as Animal Kingdom Lodge, the Yacht Club and the Poly which all had the WOW factor which for me was missing at POR. I loved being onsite at Disney and loved the boat from POR to Downtown Disney but I am determined to stay at the Poly next time I go.
As for Portofino Bay, this definately has the wow factor. It does feel a little bit formal at first, but once I saw people wondering back and forth to the pool in their swim wear I felt more relaxed. The theming is awesome and the rooms are lovely as are the staff who are all very friendly. It seemed very quiet whilst we were there and I had the Villa Pool all to myself one morning.
