Anyone reached the stage of having a Future Needs Assessment for their child?
DS is only 14 and school are already preparing this and asking for input. Any tips and pointers? I don't want to miss anything important or say the wrong thing.

//Sorry can't offer you any help but having a 10 year old who is moving back into mainstream next year this is no doubt in our future, may I ask what it is? Is it to do with the childs possible career options/further education/special needs help?

It is the planning for their transition from school to further education, independant living and careers, pretty scary really

Gosh, DD is 15 and we have not had to do this. I just contact the learning assistance teacher or the head of year if there is anything that is needed.

Each step is scary isn't it. I was worried sick about Ashley starting reception class, then junior school and now senior school. In one way I think we are lucky to have the children now and not a few years ago when other people were not so aware of special needs people.

At Josh's annual review when he was in year 9 (aged 13) it was statutory that we discussed what will be happening when he leaves school along with Connexions. This is started then so that we as parents have time to discuss what we would like to happen. Also, some Special needs colleges have long waiting lists.
We have decided so far that we would like to Josh to stay on his school until he's 19 and his school have agreed with this.
It was also mentioned last year that Josh needs re-assessing for his Official statement as this does not meet his adult needs. However, we have major differences (from years ago) with the Ed. Phys. who is in charge at the moment so the LEA have agreed to wait for another few years.
It is very scary Lynn and I've heard everyone feels the same but it is better to have time to discuss your DS's future needs.
TBH, that's about all I know at the moment.
Caron.

our DS2 has a record of needs and we have just been told he doesn't come under the category of needing a Future Needs Assessment. Seems in our authority anyway it is replacing the record of needs document. our other son had this sort of impute / assessment going from hospital back to school and now uni. I would reckon Lynn you need the impute of the social worker, care agency or whoever would support outhwith from school, doctor both GP and hospital and in our case the person who dealt with the special IT stuff.
pm me if you want to me to go into more detail. think DS1's is about 15 pages !!
