Hi there,
Does anyone know whether it is customary to tip in the US at places where there is no table service?
Thanks! :)

We have never tipped at a counter service place and never noticed it being done.
No Ive bever seen it done or done it myself. You are expected to tip a buffets though which I suppose is something in between CS and TS.

Generally the answer is no, but we left a tip at Wolfgang Puck Express, this is technically counter service, but you order, then the briong the food over, and they were very good clearing out table and looking after us, so we left a small tip there.
I've never even thought about doing it to be honest. Also never seen it done.

Just what I was going to say.

In my job at a counter service place in WDW, if i had been caught accepting a tip I would have been sacked!!

I'd be OK in the UK with the whole tipping thing... If you don't get good service you don't tip. End of story.
I just heard they get taxed on tips, and it doesn't seem fair for this to happen if they don't even get the tips!!!!

but you are not in a job that gets automaticly taxed on projected tips.
you are in a nice highly paid government job.

But still the fact remains that waiters and waitresses are paid less because their wage is heavily subsidised by tips. Now I'm not saying you should leave a tip for very bad service but I think some people have grown so accusomed to eating in Britain, where the wage levels are higher than that of servers in the US, that they feel they shouldn't tip unless they've had exceptional service...

I cant help but think that companies should pay a decent wage rather than expect customers to pay for a percentage of it :erm:

Tipping is a bit difficult isn't it? I read on here ages ago to leave a small tip for bad service and the usual % for good service and that's the rule I tend to follow. I don't agree with companies paying small wages with tips having to make up a large part of the income but that's how it is in the US. This last trip I noticed a couple of things re-tips. We took the shuttle bus from the hotel to the Parks and it had the usual sign about gratuities. My DD & I noticed that very few people tipped the driver and none of the Americans who got off the bus before us did. The other thing was at the end of the week, my DD had to go back up to the hotel room as she forgot our disney tickets. The housekeeping staff was cleaning the room and thanked my dd for our daily tips. She said she knew we were not Americans as they left usually $1 per day. She was so appreciative my DD was embarrassed.
My dd is a student and I work for Local Authority but we both thought the US is a huge country full of contradictions.
