Im in teh middle of planning (well pricing at the moment!) our Aug 2008 WDW trip for my 40th.
Would love to do a cruise as part of it but am worried the kids would fall in!!!! They will be both 5, and paerhaps my nephew (2.5) would come.
How safe is it??? Sorry if this is a daft question.

I understand completely where you are coming from, but I have not heard of anyone going overboard, I dont think it would do anything for Disney at all so Im sure they have it all very safe and secure.
On the boats I have been on, if you did manage to get through the safety screen, you would drop about 5ft to another platform with another screen, so you would have to try very hard to fall off.

THanks guys. My DD is a very adventurous type!! Glad you can see where Im coming from.
not a silly question at all Susie, but it would be extremely difficult for a child (or adult) to fall in. Disney are very safety conscious and the railings are such that imho kids would have a hard job to get over!:)

Yes I'll vouch for that as our toddler 21 months is a bit of a pickle & he was fine-there are screens as well as the railings so kids all ok!
Imagine what would happen if Disney lost a child, but that said I absolutely know where your coming from as until we got on board, I had same worries!

Its a common question (and concern), but as far as I am aware DCL haven't lost any kids yet !!!
As previous posters have stated, most public access decks are very well screened and/or over look other decks so there is almost zero danger of a child accidentally going overboard.
The main area that most people have concerns with re: small children, is with the personal verandahs that are accessed from cat6 (and above) cabins;
However,
- although most of these have railings, to allow good views, they also have a clear, perspex screen on the inside making them resistant to climbing ! FYI, a few cat6s near the back of the ship have a solid wall instead of railings (and incidentally most of these have a larger outdoor area than the standard railing ones - take a look at the deck plans).
- the height of the railings is well above the height of small children, so they would not be able to pull themselves up.
- the door to get onto these verandahs apparently requires a degree in door-opening-technology, and are difficult enough for some adults to struggle to open them  ! Thus there is little danger of little ones accessing the verandah area without an adult present.
- you can request the removal of climbable objects such as the table (and/or chairs) if you wish.
I believe that incidents that involve persons going overboard from cruise ships are almost exclusively to due excessive drinking or suicide.
I hope that has put your mind at rest somewhat.

I worried about my 2 the 1st time - but we were told they would net the balcony (not Disney) of our cabin. However as others have said they are made as safe as absolutely possible. As it turned out we opted not to have a balcony, not many lines seem to net off the balconies now. My 2 were never a problem, however we never left them alone in the cabins where we have had a balcony and they were never alone in public areas. Also, I think they saw my fear of standing anywhere the railings!!
Next cruise we have booked a balcony cabin with a connecting inside cabin for the boys so that they cannot sleepwalk onto the balcony whilst we are asleep, also they will be older - 13 and 10 - and I dont want them messing around, as I said earlier I have a fear of the edge of the ships - it always takes me 2 or 3 days to go up to the railing.

I do remember reading a post on the Dis the a mum had caught her 2 year old standing ontop of the table in there verhanda trying to climb up. Obviously she got a little freaked and asked the staff to remove the table and chairs from the verhanda.

Kids will get anywhere wont they! Im looking at booking a cruise last min in Aug as part of a DIY deal.
I guess the same issue here is the same as everywhere with kids - dont take your eyes off them for a second.

Hi
It is not silly question as I was worried about my kids well.
Again we are going this year book Cat 8 with window as we feel it is safe as we love to have verandahs but think more worry for me!!
I agreed with jydbnsn.
Relax and enjoy your holiday
