View Full Version : DVC points or cash

Been looking at booking DCL for 2008 and notice that you can use DVC points to book a place.
Is this a good use of points or is it more cost efective to use cash.
It appears to cost about 191 points per person for a 4 day cruise for a cat 5 cabin during regular season.
Any thoughts.

And about time too! I have been wondering when you guys were going to add your names to the 'who's cruising this year' thread :)
Hope to see your names on the 'all aboard' list soon! ;)

Hi Bob
We used DVC points for our cruise this year and paid cash as well to include our son rather than use more points. Having said that we have recently bought into DVC from a resaler and had some carry over points to use which came in nicely. I think it is good value to use points as not only do you get the accommodation but food and soft drinks are included as well.

Bob, I have been looking into this cruising lark also:thumbs-up I have decided that points seem to be better value and maybe a "cash" stay at RPR and the Dolphin afterwards would make for a pleasant Autumn visit.

Points are worth $10-12 per point in the rental market. If it costs 191 points per person for a 4-day cruise, the question is can you pay less than $3820 - $4,584 (assuming there are 2 of you).....because thats how much you would earn from renting your points out instead.
:wavey:
Looking at May for example it looks expensive to use points.

I thought about using points for our August cruise but decided to use cash instead as it would have taken about 470 points for the 4 of us. The way I'd look at it is you'd get an awful lot of nights for the 382 points the cruise would cost you.

Hi, Bob.we looked at the prices on DCL....and found that www.dreamsunlimitedtravel.com (http://www.dreamsunlimitedtravel.com) were $600 - $900 cheaper booking through them.....which we booked..........you can browse their website and request a online quote and ask if you can use your points ,as they deal direct with disney and seem to be able to access DCL system and hold staterooms for you....till you decide........they may be able to advise....
Can I ask where you got the price list from.
Spot on Tink - it is from the Disney Cruise Line website. Yes you can get cheaper if you go through a cruise consolidator like Dreamsunlimited but its a good a starting point as any and proves the case - the best use of DVC Points is for DVC Properties; if you don't want to stay at a DVC property then rent them out and let someone else stay there instead  .

that's over 2 years worth of points for us, for a 4 night holiday for only 2 of us,
that's not feeling like a great deal to me - All 4 of us could have 2 x 2 week stays at Disney for the same points. Or a week in a grand villa.
I would like to try cruising but not with my points.

That was exactly my reasoning - 3 nights for nearly 2 years worth of points felt like a really bad deal. I'd rather stay on site for much longer than use the points for a cruise

I think it will be cash then!
Anyone else booking for October 2008 so we can share a table with some people who have something in common with us?
Bob
I believe I got it wrong about points over cash:blush:
Thanks for the info chaps.
Anyone want to rent some points?:D

Thanks Bob,
It won't be October as we are planning Las Vegas/California in Sept 08 for Jools's 50th, but Jools is considering a cruise, even though we spent years sailing around the world on many ships as large as 300,000tonnes. Even at that size they still moved around in heavy seas- causing sea sickness.
What size are the cruise ships?

83,000 tonnes is a bit small compared to what we were used to.
This was 306,000 tonnes, however the intertainment was a projector in the bar, and on a Sunday we played cricket on the helecopter pad.

This one was running between Borneo and Japan carrying gas to the power stations, it was only 43,000 tonnes and Jools was sick every week in the typhoon season, She was OK for 6 weeks when we were in dry dock in Japan. :)

I was an engineer on the ships, and when I was promoted Jools could come with me (FOC). At the time I didn't think it was amazing - it was just part of the job, however we had such a good time last night looking at the photos of all the ships we've been on and realise that they were great days - travelling the world and seeing loads of different places (and getting a great wage).
