It's put as a credit on your onboard account - everyone has to have an account on the ship, as you can't pay for anything with cash (or on CC). I don't think they will let you sail without an OB account.
Yes, these credits are a handy contribution towards the tips at the end of the cruise which may be paid via your OB account.
Of course you could choose to buy something nice for yourself from the gift shop or a treatment from the spa instead ;)
In the unlikely event you did not spend all your OB credit , you would lose it , unless it was money you had put on the account yourself.
Keep asking ............

Sorry Corrinda could you just explain that question again ?
..if you mean could you withdraw your OB credit to make a cash tip, the answer is no, if it was all, or part of, the 'free' credit given to you by a T/A or by DCL, but the answer would be yes, if you put the $300 on your account yourself from your own funds (ie it was your own money in the first place)...is that what you are asking ?
If is any help, we paid a large part of our tips from our 'free' OB credit last time, but not in cash - you can ask Guest Services on the ship to print off individual credit slips for each tipped position from your account, and put those in the tipping envelope instead of cash...a sort of proof of electronic transfer from your account, to their personal accounts (all staff on board will have accounts too).
I would imagine that this would be the most popular way of paying the tips, rather than in cash...though you are free to pay in cash should you wish to.
If your 'free' OB credit was not enough to cover the recommended tips in full, you would just 'top up' your account from your own funds to meet them (normally by paying the difference by visa credit card at the end of your cruise).
Any 'free' OB credit not used at the end of your trip, you would lose. Any money spent over and above the 'free' OB credit, you'd normally settle up for by credit card at the end of your cruise. The 'free' OB credit is always used up first, when DCL bill you for anything during the cruise- so you would only 'lose' it if you spent less than the 'free' OB credit amount.
They take your credit card details at the start of your cruise to open an OB account - so don't forget to bring your card with you !!!
Hope that helps answer your question...if not...sorry it is a bit confusing !.. post again :wavey:

Yes, I would ask Guest Sevices to print credit slips for you, to put in the tipping envelopes - alot less hassle and that way it ensures you use your 'free' OB credit all up. :thumbs-up
