Can anybody recommend a good value decent hotel in NYC?
A friend recommended a couple for me, but when I checked them out on Trip Advisor, the reviews were pretty bad.
Thanks

I stayed at The Herald Square hotel, was basic, but in a great location & couldn't fault it!

We stayed in the Salisbury Hotel on West 57th Street last summer, as there were five of us and it gave us an excellent price on a one-bedroom suite. The suite was pretty big (by NY standards) and the staff were really nice, but it was fairly basic apart from that. But since we were only there to sleep, we didn't care much! :)

Have stayed at the Salisbury 3 times now, excellent hotel and good buffet breakfast.
We stayed at www.milburnhotel.com on W 76th Street. A very family friendly hotel with great facilities. The tube and bus are just a hundred yards away on Broadway and it takes 5 minutes to get to Times Square or 15 mins on foot. Upper West Side is a very safe and much quieter area to stay in too.

I have stayed at a couple both which had a bit of a slating int trip advisor but both were great.
one was Park Central - this was a short walk to central park and walkable distance to time square but away from the noice. instide the rooms were clean and the staff were great as well.
the second was The roosevelt more central a a couple of blocks from the rockerfeller centre and 5th avenue and grand central station, this had an impressive lobby and the room was newly decorated, only gripe was the safe did not work in the room but we were offered a safety depoit box downstairs for free and a free breakfast for the incovenience so im not going to gripe too much.
Both these hotels did not have bery good reviews on trip advisor but I didn't find any thing wrong at all so if you find one you like then book it.
NYC is a great place i have been twice and planning a third visit

We recently stayed at the Roosevelt. It was great, the rooms were not huge (apparently this is standard in NY) but it was clean, the staff were brilliant and you could walk to almost anything
we stayed in the recently refurbished New Yorker it was really nice and so central...3 blocks from The Empire State one Block Macys

We, too, stayed at the New Yorker Ramada Plaza at the beginning of March for four nights. We couldn't really fault it, even though it was currently undergoing refurbishment. There were mixed reviews on Trip Advisor, but I think it all depends on what you expect. Yes, the rooms were pretty basic, but they were clean, tidy and we certainly couldn't complain about the room service - always had our beds made, clean towels, etc, etc.
It's in a fantastic location; opposite Madison Square Gardens/Penn Station, very close to Empire State Building and only a short walk away from Times Square.
We would definitely stay there again!!:)
So far i've stayed at:
Travel Inn - 9th and 42nd St. Fairly basic room, 2 beds, tv, en-suite, but clean and very cheap for NYC. Right opposite a police station so very safe location, 10 mins walk from Times Sq. Marks out of 10 - 8
New Yorker - 34th St. Massive room, clean, basic again, didn't feel as safe as the Travel Inn, but okay. Again, cheap for NYC. 6/10
Shelburne Murray Hill - 303 Lexington Ave. Fantastic. Spacious room with two double beds and a small kitchenette. Great staff, nice quiet location, but close enough to the action to be walkable. Great bar and restuarant attached to the hotel called Rare. Medium priced, but worth it. 9/10.

Hi, we stayed at The Paramount on 45th street, we've booked the same again for this year. Have a look at their website, but don't book with them directly, try www.bookings.com.

How much do you want to pay ?
Our lower priced favourite is Hotel Metro, with standard rooms @ $225 - $295 from March to August.
Close to Macys, very clean, open air rooftop bar, delis and bars either side.

Have also stayed at Edison Hotel, New Yorker, Portland Square in same price range ie less than $250. All were OK but preferred the Metro. The New Yorker is better than the trip advisor reviews indicate.
NYC hotel rates seem to be more expensive than ever this year. :erm:

When we go to NYC we stay at the Grand Hyatt at Grand Central Station.
Great location, gorgeous hotel and staff were brilliant. Just had friends go out for St Patricks day and they said they were impressed and would go back to the same hotel. I'm planning on another stay there this year, its cheaper to bok direct with the $ rate at the moment than through a TA. My cousins a TA and even with her discount she couldnt beat it.
We've also stayed at The Salisbury
From our trip report: -
The room was positively cavernous with two double beds, 2 closets, stylish brown bathroom (!) microwave, fridge, coffee maker, sink etc and I've never had a proper hallway in a hotel room before.
Overall initial impression was that this was a first class location for a hotel (opposite Carnegie Hall, close to Central Park), clean but could do with a bit of modernising perhaps. We certainly had nothing to complain about – we didn’t intend being in the room much!

We stayed at The Wellington which I think 57th and 8th, and not far to get to Times Square and had breakfast in the cafe underneath.
The next time stayed at The Roosevelt which cost more but was lovely inside...we had breakfast in the hotel each morning and it was gorgeous.
