does anyone else not want to be on first name terms with their server and wish they would just serve and not intrude in a meal which after all is a private matter between the diners?!

:d: :d: I know what you mean A-L, I guess its to ensure they get their tip tho'. I prefer it to the typical British "server" who acts like you're doing them a favour, but I agree sometimes they intrude too much.
Maybe its a USA thing, you know this "you are SO welcome" bit, but we found Americans mostly charming, including servers. Made a nice change from surly British ways.

I prefer the friendly approach - I know they may have an ulterior motive (the tip) but it adds to the experience for me:wave:

If you get a wee scots guy with short black hair, age 19, looking a bit nervous as your server. It's my son. Please feel free to give him as big a tip as possible. ;)

i love the way the american servers treat you!
think i would die of shock if it happened here but that's just not british!
when i grow up i want to say " hi, i'm purple and i'm your server for todaaaaaaaay!"

I think it's because this is what Americans expect: If they don't get asked if they're OK/if they want more drinks/whatever they may not leave a decent tip. Just a product of the service oriented culture I guess. I don't mind it but my dad found it OTT which I can understand.

I think it's nice to be asked if your enjoying your meal or if you wish to order anything else. They do this in Majorca & we go back to the resturants that take the time to make sure everything is as it should be:d:

We had a server in IHOP say "you're So Welcome" to pretty much everything once. It was quite funny...she was nice but it seemed such a fake thing to say! She did however sound genuine but it is weird!

I like the way you are treated but hate being called madam. It really gets my goat, but people are really nice ,and never had a bad server in all the times we've been. You get good service, you don't mind tipping. Over here, ha they could learn a few lessons from our American cousins. I know the Americans are nice most of the time because the tips make up their pay, but it's nice to be treat nice too.

I look talking to the servers, it so nice to have eye contact with them as most of the english restaurants we visit are so miserable,,

I'm hoping we have this level of service. When we were there in 2005 we were very disappointed in the service in general (apart from Hard rock and Race rock). Most of our servers tended to be either African or Eastern European and lacked the American warm, friendly and efficient style. Fingers crossed. ;)

I don't mind talking to them, what I don't like are the ones who only start talking after they have recieved a good tip. I'm not paying for them to talk I just want to leave.

I really like it, especially if you go back a few days later and the server remembers you! Maybe I'm just sad. Goodness knows what Karen will make of it, first trip to Florida and all...she is going to be so bemused! :d:

Yes our first trip was in 2005. We went to ihop around 5 times on that 2 week visit. A year later we returned and the server May remembered us from before! so nice! You would never get that in the UK!

I agree, it makes for a more relaxed meal, as long as they are not in your face all the time.
