The Gulf Coast is the best for beaches and St. Pete`s is one of our favourites. We always visit there for the day when we go to Orlando. It is just a bit further down than Clearwater. We spend a few hours at the beach and then drive down to the pier. DH and our sons fish whilst I have a look around the pier shops, aquarium etc. A 2 minute drive up the road is a small mall called The Bay where there is a really nice Johnny Rockets. Have a look here www.stpete-pier.com www.stpetebeach.com www.floridasbeach.com :-)

We have been to Clearwater on the West Coast and Coco on the East coast, both were very nice but we prefer Clearwater. Wouldn't mind going to see St Pete's.

Hi,

We were thinking of going to Clearwater Beach but jsut for the day. We are staying on the US27 just off the junction with i92. Should we get on the I4 an head towards Tampa? How long would it take roughly and isit well signposted. Also are there plenty of eating places for lunch and/or dinner?

Sorry for the questions

Thanks

Karen, don`t be sorry for asking quetions, that`s what we`re all here for. :) It will take you about an hour and a half to get to Clearwater and it is very well sign posted. Just hit the I4 and follow the signs for Tampa and then Clearwater. A girl at the hairdressers I go to stayed with her family at Clearwater and they really liked the food and drinks at the Beachside grill and bar at The Palm Pavilion Inn. St Pete gets my vote too. Clearwater is in the same neck of the woods, and you can drive between them, but it does tend to take longer than it looks on the map... If you want peace and quiet and miles of sand, look for somewere in the middle between the two and just park up and enjoy the solitude.

Although we love St Pete's as an area to stay in, a conversation I had with a friend recently (who went there for the day - on my recommendation) led me to think I had given her the wrong advice. She didn't settle into the place at all and got a bit fed up - mainly because she couldn't really see the sea! Important that, really. Instead, I should have said to go to St Pete's Beach and drive up to Passe a Grill (spelling?) or up to John's Pass - about another 20 minutes further up. John's Pass is a great place to spend a few hours. There's the Boardwalk with the dolphin watch cruises and quaint little shops - not much else. Across the road and a little drive back to St Pete's is Treasure Island. Lovely beach. What you have to remember is that most of the hotels here are beachfront and if you have ever been to Alcudia in Majorca (the main "strip" is just a concrete jungle) then you will know that you can't really appreciate what's on the other side. Anyway, if you go to St Pete's Beach try to have lunch in what used to be the Holiday Inn (the round hotel). We stayed here once and the top floor has a revolving restaurant which is fab for views all around. Food wasn't too bad either.

We had a day at Cocoa beach and it was great. Took about an hour from our villa (West of Disney) great for surf shops and lovely beach/pier. Dh dropped us there while he went to Kennedy (take flipflops though, the sand was hot in April)

I too think Cocoa Beach is great for a day out. Closest of all the beaches from Disney area. Ron Jons is a must and on the beach you can hire sunbeds, umbrellas and surf boards.

We're going to give Fort de Soto beach near St Petes a visit, the guides highly recommend it. Let you know when we've been.

Another great place to visit is Madeira Beach and John`s Pass on the Gulf Coast which aren`t far from St. Pete`s. www.johnspass.com :-)
