does anyone have any idea that if you buy a ps2 game in america will it work on your playstation in the uk

No , PS2 games are region coded so an USA game wont work on a Uk PS2 unless the PS2 is modified.

The PS2 games are not compatible, we were told that unless we had a 'chipped' PS2 they dont work. Games for Nintendo DS, Gameboys, and PS3 are compatible however.
