View Full Version : Miami
The wedding I'm going to in December has now been 'moved' to Miami :( (would have preferred Disney but never mind).
Having never been to Miami before can anyone tell me things to do/not to miss?
I'm then planning on spending the last couple of days back in Disney for my 'Disney fix' - thinking about the easiest way to get from Miami to Orlando (without driving) - is it best by plane?
Thanks

Clare can't give you any info. re. Miami but I would definitely fly rather than drive.
I'd check out AA, Delta and Continental for flights - also check out the price of a return as well as a single as it could be cheaper, although not always. I'd check expedia as they will list which type of aircraft it is too - some of the airlines use a turbo prop which could be interesting but not something I'd like TBH.

I know my mum is planning to drive from Disney to Miami (and back again) this December for her Disney/Cruise holiday. I know she said the driving would be pretty straightforward, but if driving is a definate no no then how about looking into bus routes. I'm sure there may be some direct ones.

We are flying into Orlando, driving down to Miami for our Cruise and then flying home again out of Miami. I don't think Orlando to Miami is *too* bad of a drive.... although I have never done it before :d:

Hi :wavey:
Miami is fab, you will love it. We were only there for one night and so didn't get to do/or see a great deal, but Ocean Drive is fab for people watching. There is a great little cafe, called News Cafe, I believe, that did lovely food and was a cool place to just sit and chill. Bayside was good, there are loads of shops and restaurants there and you can get the boat from there to go and see all the expensive houses on Fisher and Star Islands. Mango's was also a fun night out on Ocean Drive. I cant wait to go back, later this year hopefully if DBF gets his Visa renewal sorted.:spin:
Thanks for the replies - don't think I fancy a turbo prop plane though :omg:

Hi Clare
Had my honeymoon in Miami and Key West in Sept 2006 - 1 week in each. :spin: IMHO south beach (SoBe) was overated. The boardwalk was renovated recently and is great for walks and people watching. There is an abundance of gay bars but all very friendly and welcoming even for newly married couples. Overall a very hip and :cool2: place but I much preferred Key West - just more relaxed and laid back which was what I needed after all the wedding planning:zzz: I am sure you will have a great time though:spin:
South Beach is a bit tacky, i was expecting glitz and glamour, but it's more Jordan than Claudia Schiffer if you know what i mean! *lol* I still love it though! As someone mentioned, Ocean Drive is a good place to people watch. I'd recommend doing the celeb houses boat cruise from Bay harbour, a great way to spend a few hours, you could also go up to Bal Harbour and window shop in Gucci, Prada etc, and if you fancy it, you could visit Little Havana and Coral Gables. Or, if you are like me, just bake on the beach!! ;) I'm actually thinking of doing a solo trip there myself in Sept.
You could get the Greyhound bus from Miami up to Orlando, it takes about 4-5 hours, i've done it before a few times, the area of the bus stations are a bit run-down, but not unsafe.

I just found that online the other night... Wondered what it was like... Would you say it was suitable with kids :wavey: Any tips??
Miami will have considerably nicer (warmer) weather in Dec than Orlando Clare. Flight time to Orlando is about 1 hour. If you fly American Airlines they tend to use Boeing 757's. You could also consider flying from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) which is just outside Miami and is a nicer, quieter airport to use. Fares from FLL are likely to be cheaper, but Delta do use Embraer's which are turbo props - the same type that FlyBE uses to fly to the Channel Islands from London. :wavey:
Errrr out of interest Clare, Miami is still in Florida, so not sure why you began this thread in Non-Florida Trip Planning. ;)

How old are the children? Younger ones might find it a bit boring, teenagers would probably go for it though. Some of the houses are amazing!!

Thanks Tracie ~ they are young (will be 4 & 7) but I would LOVE to see the houses ... Would that be cruel ??!! :d:
Oh ~ and do you sit outside on the boat? Otherwise I will get seasick
