Hi :wavey:

Booked up for 2 weeks in Mexico (Hautulco) for this July, need a summer break before i see the mouse in November ;). Was suppose to be cruising from New York but flight prices have gone mad, so Mexico here we come.

Anyway, never been to Mexico before so im confused on the currency. I see its Pesos but i've checked Thomas Exchange and i cant see an exchange rate to buy any. What do you all do ? Do you take American Dollars ? If you do take dollars do you get given dollars in the change or pesos ?

How will i know what im spending if i dont know the peso exchange rate ?

Sorry for all the questions, very confused :confused2

Thanks for any help.

xx

When I went a few years ago we took US Travellers cheques. TBH, didn't really change any as we were AI, BUT I do remember everyone recommending these were the best to take.

I would take US dollars as well but you will get your change in pesos.

We took US TCs as these were used everywhere, had some Peso's for the bus/taxi. They prefer US $'s

hi, we have just returned from riviera maya. we took $750 with us and hardly spent anything!! remember you need $48 per person to leave mexico - which you pay at the airport.

anything that you will buy they will show prices in $ and in peso's. But they only give change in peso's.

They prefer you to use dollars as they can get a higher rate back for it.

when we were there in may it was - $10 = 100 peso's.

If you need any more info - let me know x

Thanks for all the replies.

I am AI so i really wont spend that much i reckon, its just weird knowing how much to take.

We are going with First Choice and they have added the departure tax onto the cost of our holiday, im guessing i will get some sort of receipt through to show at the airport ?

I have some dollar bills here for my upcoming Florida trip so i could take some for the taxis etc.

Can you use a Travellers Cheque the same way as you would in Orlando - handing over the counter like cash or do i need to exchange it ?

So if you get change in Pesos, im guessing it would be best to take smaller Dollar Notes and Travellers cheques so your not left with loads of change at the end? would prob just leave it for the cleaners anyway.

Ok another strange question as i really dont know much about Mexico, is it a poor country, like Cuba or am i being really thick ? Did anyone take any gifts or anything out for cleaners etc ? Sorry if that sounds daft. :confused2

hi, we never took TC so i cant help you on that question, also make sure that you get areciept to say you have paid airport tax as they can be quite demanding for the money at the airport. When you leave the airport you will see some poorness - little tin shacks on the side of road etc. but in cancun there are some v wealthy ppl. one taxi driver we had, we gave him $10 tip which is about a weeks wages for him (he told us that) he was made up!!

when we left the hotel, we left some clothes and $10 tip for the maids. we use to leave $1 a day for our room to be done and the more you give the more they do to your room, my mam left $10 a day (mad!) and she got loads of fresh flowers, fruit etc everyday!

we got all our money in $10 bills, they had a beuro change place in hotel and they changed it back for us to dollars.

Im soooo jealous!! have a good time x
