Thanks

I can recommend the Victoria Hotel, which is just opposite the Central station. Its walking distance to the shopping (and red light  ) district, and easy to get to and from the airport via the airport trains. You can find very good deals for it on the internet.

We stayed on the Amstel Botel a few years ago - we phoned them and booked direct.

Very basic but clean, with your own bathroom. Within walking distance of the station & the sights ;)

And a bit of a novelty staying on a boat!

It's been a few years since but when we last visited Amsterdam we stayed in the Hotel Terdam.

Location was ace, about 5mins walk from the Leidesplein and in a much nicer area than the station which as you know, is very close to the red light district.

From the airport it is a 20min train to the central station and then just hop on a tram for 5mins and you are almost at the hotel. Very easy to find.

For Coronation Street fans I believe this hotel featured in one episode with Roy and....oh I can't for the life of me think of her name, but the lady who had a sex change. They have got pictures up in the lobby.

Great staff, great location....

Thanks very much, I'll have a look at all of these later...it's so tough trying to narrow it all down !

If you dont have a tight budget I can highly recomment the Banks Hotel, beautiful setting, close enough to all the action/art galleries etc but not in the middle of the stag/hen weekend places, free brekkie, free drinks including alcohol (they have decanters of spirits in your room and a help yourself bar downstairs as well as complimentary snacks)

The view over the canal is goegeous, very romantic, and a quick tram ride gets you to the red light district/shopping centre etc in 5 mins :)

We have stayed at the Bilderberg Gardens Hotel which was excellent but about a 10/ 15 minute tram ride into the town centre.

We have also stayed at the Krasnapolasky, right on Dam Square which was expensive but fantastic (our favourite). It's about 1 min from Red Light District, 5 mins from Central Station and around 10 mins from Anne Frank Museum.

Don't stay at the Dam Hotel !!! Was there in February and it was a bit dodgy to say the least !! There was no reception, you just had to go in via a buraeu de change place !!

Lots of nice places though...

The Hotel Rho just off Dam Square is lovely. We had a great time there and it's really central for everything.
