two of our party are planning on doing this in September, but we have one or two questions to ask before taking the plunge and booking it.

If we book a morning session, will our family be allowed to enter the restaurant and take pictures ? (at this price you want to record the event)

How well is the cage visible from the normal public viewing areas ?

And finally ....... How far would I get taking a camera myself ? If I could get a few snaps of us in the "gear" that would be great

i've booked the 10am slot, after reading highlander's trip report i'm pretty sure you can enter the restaurant and take pics/film thru the glass. whether you would be allowed to do this after the restaurant is open and serving customers...i doubt it.
the CM's take your pic in your wetsuit.
pretty sure you are visible to the public as they go thru shark encounter.
someone will be along shortly to confirm or correct this

Hi don't attempt to take a camera yourself, an official photographer does take your pic, get the 10am slot and you will get in sharks grill before opening to take pics, you can be seen from walkway, its a fantastic experience
