View Full Version : Buying DVC q
Hello all,
We have been thinking of buying into DVC for a while now (and since we have a little on due in March - all being well), I'm thinking it's even more important now.
We thought and looked round SSR, which we liked, but I just wondered which resort you would buy into and why?
We thought SSR because we like the DTD area, as it's central for I-drive, US/IOA too.
I've thought about OKW as on resale it's a little cheaper too.
If you have 'little' ones do you think AKL would be better?
Thanks for your thoughts............

we bought into ssr as it was the only one disney were offering at the time. when i spoke to a cm at dvc yesterday sh says that ssr has been completely sold by them and they are now selling ak, but obviously on resale you would have a choice of resorts. in terms of location i love the bwv and bcv cos you can just walk into epcot (my fav resort) but ssr is an easy drive to epcot too. ak might be fun for little kids as they grow up spotting all the animals

WE bought into SSR because as well as loving the resort, it had a longer contract than the others and we wanted to buy direct from Disney.

I think when we did our tour, they showed us round Boardwalk but were only selling somewhere else. Am I right in thinking that the place you buy, is really only on paper and you can choose where to stay on your holiday( according to points)?
We did not buy into it at that point as we were about to emabark on a building project. I often wish we had!
I didn' realise you could buy in "resale". Where can I find out more about this?
you buy points at a home resort and this is the resort you can book 11 months before your check out date, you can book the other resorts 7 months before your check out date, so if it is a popular time you are unlikely to get a reservation at a non home resort as they will be fully booked by 7 months before. as for the resale, there are a number of companies that offer time share resales but I don't know much about them so hopefully someone will be along in a minute who will
You can buy at one resort and stay elsewhere, however you get to book at your HOME resort 11 months out, and at other resorts only 7 months out. At certain times of the year this can be significant, and at others it's not an issue at all.
We bought resale for 2 reasons - firstly I really wanted the boardwalk, and 2ndly it was a lot cheaper than buying from Disney. I did consider Old Key West as it's much cheaper but while I am sure we will stay there sometime, my dream has always been to stay at the Boardwalk so that is where I wanted to own.
There are a number of resale agents, we used www.atimeshare.com, the timeshare store also gets good reviews. You need to just see who has a contract that looks suitable for your needs.

We bought 350 points at the Wilderness Lodge Villas through resale in 2002 and have never regretted it. This resort suits us best at the moment as we have 3 daughters (oldest aged 8) who all love MK, which is only a boat ride away.
We had our honeymoon in the WL and fell in love with it. Disney were not selling this resort so we had no choice but to go through a resale agent (it was DVC by Resale).
We've since used points to stay at OKW but weren't as fond of it. Will try AKL sometime too.

When I bought only SSR was available and it also had the longest lifespan. Looked at re-sale but wanted the security of dealing direct with Disney. Good thing is you can stay anywhere with the points!

I bought SSR from Disney and then my guide found me a Boardwalk Contract (bought back by Disney on ROFR) I then bought another Beach Club Contract so we have a choice of 3 where to stay at 11 months out or any of the resorts at 7 months out.
We have never had any problem booking to stay anywhere at 7 months out. We really love Wilderness Lodge and will stay there in January for our honeymoon. We also used points for a Disney Cruise. which is another great way to spend spare points.

How do you find DVC with 3 kids? We have been mulling it over again (Dh always said if the dollar hit $2 / £1 that he would do it). We nearly bought in 2 years ago, but I just couldnt get the maths to work for us so I didnt do it then.
What sort of unit do you have and how many nights a year do you spend in it?

We bought at OKW on a resale contract because the units are larger and the points lower. We love it there and have never had any problems getting the other resorts at 7 months - we even managed to get Wilderness Lodge for a week between Christmas and New Year.

I think one of the selling points of AKL is that the 1 bed units will sleep 5 so that might be an option for you

We bought into Old Key West for the same reason as Tink Tatoo - cheaper points, larger rooms, and less points. We visited for the first time in July and we weren't disappointed. We've got 230 points which we calculated would give us a minimum of two weeks at every point in the year at Old Key West.
I've got to say though, I don't think there is a wrong option here. All the resorts are stunning, and all have their merits and their disadvantages.
From what I understand though the two hardest resorts to book rooms for at 7 months out, are the Boardwalk and Beach Club Villa's so if you are planning to go at peak holiday times I'd probably go for one of those two. Saratoga Springs appears to be the largest resort so I'd imagine that would be the easiest to book up, although it is a stunning resort. For our next holiday I want to go to VWL if possible and my wife wants to book up the AKL and we're planning a few nights stay at Vero Beach offsite also....but if things don't go to plan the consolation prize is still the gorgeous Old Key West resort.

We bought at SSR because of the longer contract. We have managed to book BCV for next February at the 7 month window so it worked out really well for us.

Our youngest daughter is still in a cot so we are able to stay in a studio still at the moment. When she is 3 it will become a little more difficult. However, although it is not official policy, you can stay with 3 kids in any of the 1-bed villas - you have to supply your own air-bed though. Or you can get two studios for about the same points as a 1-bed if you wanted to.
We have a 2 bed at WL booked for October (just under 700 points for 17 nights) so that we can take my mum. We didn't go last year so we had the points banked and ready to use with this year's. We also have a studio at WL booked for next April (16 nights - 296 points)
we're planning on possibly getting a few more points which should help too !!
