We have promised DD a laptop for her 16th birthday which is while we are in Florida in a couple of weeks , so we had been planning on buying it from walmart over there, however I have a couple of questions if anyone can help?

There is a laptop being offered by Tesco for £299 which is a much lower spec (80gb hard disc) than one for $598 in walmart (120gb hard disc/drive ) but I know people have said about customs and also about the keyboard being slightly different so the question is which one to go for??? :confused2

I know people have said that asda will honour walmart guarantees, but has anyone actually tried this?

this one (http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-6139/btnResultSort.x%3d40/btnResultSort.y%3d9.aspx) the cheapest one i would get from tesco, i wouldnt bother with the other lower priced ones, too slow

the walmart one that depends on the spec too

edit

is this the walmart one

Compaq Presario F579WM
15.4" Laptop PC w/ AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53
$598.00

if it is, thats a great spec, i would get that one

That's the same one essexmick has suggested and it is good for the money - dual core all the way! :D

Methinks Ill be heading to Walmart

As for Customs, just buy a laptop bag, and carry it on board, put the documents/box flatpacked in the case if you need to.

The Keyboard will be USA Standard, but its still pretty much the QWERTY format ;)

Be warned that the laptops come with an oh so basic package and with most you have to get Windows and an antivirus program seperate so check before you buy what programs you get with them.
Got mine from Bestbuy...have a look at www.bestbuy.com they also load the pc and get it all up and running for you(free)

Laptop with built in webcam - DD would like that, we bought her a wecam at christmas and she hasn't been able to get it working yet!!!

Only another £50 might be worth looking at, thanks for the point about software, I hadn't thought of that malcolm when you say they load it up for you, do you buy the hardware and software from them and they load it on for you? sorry for being a bit thick

We were going to buy a Toshiba (I think) from Costco when we were there but my husband phoned their customer service and it turns out that the warranty would not be valid here. If I were you I would check at Asda here before you go as they could say anything when you are there.
