Flights to and from different places for a reasonable cost?

I'm thinking of next year's holiday and was considering California and New York in the same trip but the flight costs to and from different airports seems awfully expensive: A one way flight is the same as a return one would be! Does anyone have any suggestions of websites or booking tactics to bring the cost down? I know I might have to scrap the idea and do the two destinations in different trips but just wondering if there might be a way :)

We flew into NYC and out of Orlando in June with almost no extra cost. I believe the only destination they fly into on the west coast is San Fransisco.

Thanks! I found this recommendation elsewhere too and it's brought up some excellent prices. I think I was looking for flight plus hotel at first which is why it wasn't showing the multi-stop option!
