We're off to Edinburgh at the end of August for a few days and we're really looking forward to our trip as we've not been to Scotland before.
We're planning to visit Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Yacht Britannia but otherwise we need some advice and recommendations to make the most out of our trip.
I've noticed that there are loads of Dibbers from Scotland so what better place to ask for trip advice. :spin:

The castle is excellent, you could spend many hours there and beside the castle there is Camera Obscura - brilliant fun for kids. Don't forget Edinburgh Zoo and Deepsea World which is just over the Forth Road Bridge so not in Edinburgh but not far out.

:D Yes go and meet some Weegies! Seriously, if you can spare a day Glasgow is well worth visiting, loads of lovely architecture, museums, shops, galleries.
Both Glasgow and Edinburgh have open top bus tours which will take you around the main sights.

Might just do that. ;) :d:
The Edinburgh Tattoo is fantastic but you would have had to book last year for that as it gets sold out. Festival events around the gardens can also be good throughout the day and evening. Dynamic Earth, which is next to Hollyrood Palace, is good for kids. Edinburgh Dungeon was a firm favourite of my DS12 although DS7 was a bit scared. The Scott Monument if you are fit which is in Edinburgh Gardens - quite a hike but great view at the top on a good day.
If you don't mind driving a few miles outside the centre, there is the Air Museum at East Fortune (over to the East) where concorde is located. Makes a great day out and the red arrows were there the week before last.
I just love the atmosphere. Have a great time! :wavey:

I've just been looking at the Open Top bus tour websites and was wondering whether they were worth doing. They've just been added to my ever growing list too. This is almost as good as planning our Florida trips. ;)

Take your kids to the museum of childhood on the Royal Mile - its fab, I spend half the time saying "I had one of those" Even better its free.
Dynamic earth is good, reminds me of EPCOT in parts.
If the Festival is still on then just wandering round soaking upthe atmosphere is great.
The schools go back up here next week or the week after depending on region so it might not be so busy.

As you are looking to do Castle and Britannia, it may make sense to look at this ticket as it includes tour buses and entrance into castle, britannia and holyrood palace.

Edinburgh is greate. If you are up the beginning of September(Sunday 2nd), there will be the Fireworks display which begins around 9pm as this is the finale to the festivals.
Enjoy your visit. :spin: :spin:

The open top bus is a good way to get around as you can get on and off it as much as you like. I like the flower clock in Princes St Gardens and the statue of Greyfriars Bobby.

We really enjoyed the Camera Obscura. We stayed at the Fountaincourt apartments EQ2, it was very nice to have the self-catering, to save money on eating out. There is a Scotsmid grocery store right around the corner, though the person we spoke with (while looking for a grocery) at the EQ2 told us about the mini-Tesco, which was a different direction and much smaller!
I made it up like 1/3 of Arthurs Seat, I did enjoy that - though it was too breezy, I didn't want to fall off the mountain. :) We took a day trip to the Highlands, but next time I'd like to spend more time in the city.

leave in plenty time to get to the castle, the festival will still be on and there are lots of street entertainers on the royal mile (the road up to the castle). camera obscura is very close to the castle entrance. for something to eat with the very best view of the castle etc, go up to the cafe in Debenhams on Princes street.! definately take the open top bus tour, maybe get off in the grassmarket for something to eat. there are ghost tours ( maybe too late or too scary for your little ones) also visit Mary Kings close, just off the royal mile. i'm sure you will find plenty to do
In the evening, do the ghost walk, really good fun and not too scary lol
I almost forgot about the hovercraft between Kirkcaldy and Portobello which was being trialled last month. I believe it was hailed a success. I missed out as the trial period was fully booked but it looked fantastic. Keep an eye out on the Stagecoach website nearer the time as I'm sure it will be launched permanently soon.
