Hi
do you get to know your cabin number before you board and is there a chance ( has anyone ever got one ) of an upgrade

Hi Baz
When we booked our cruise, direct with DCL, we got to choose our cabin. We chose #7620
I have read that you can get upgraded free.

If you have been allocated a "gty" cabin, this means all the cabins at this grade have been reserved...however, due to the generous nature of the deposit system (ie full deposit back before 75 days) many, many, people will drop out or transfer to other cruises as their plans get more specific (alot of people hold cabins 'incase' they go because it is cheaper to book early and also they get more choice of cabin).
To accommodate this DCL will offer a "gty" at this time to anyone wishing to book - this means you are guarenteed to get that category, or higher.
Sometimes DCL will also offer good priced gtys as a way to fill the ship if the sales are a little slow.
Although DCL obviously have a better picture of what cabins are actually taken after 75 day mark, you are not likely to know about your cabin number until quite a while after that as DCL may want to promote some slow selling cat.s and there are still quite a few people booking 'last minute' cruises.
If you have a gty you will normally get allocted your cabin number around 4 weeks before sailing...though occasionally this can happen earlier. You normally would find out by checking your account on the DCL website. Occasionally your T/A may phone you with this information.
Very occasionally you may find you have been upgraded when checking in at the port.
If you opt for a gty then once you have been allocated your cabin by DCL there is no way of asking for a cabin change if you don't like where they have put you, without you paying for an upgrade. DCL do not recognise 'bad' or 'noisy' rooms.
We had a gty 12 on our first cruise...we were upgraded for free to a cat.10.......great !!!! we thought  ....till we realised it was under the ship's nightclub  ..and had been reported as a noisy cabin in the unofficial stateroom reports. :( This was spoiling my looking forward to our cruise so much... before I had even set foot on the ship, that I decided to upgrade ourselves to a cat.9.
It seems that from other discussion boards, there is simply no rhyme or reason to free upgrades - you are just as likely to get an upgrade with "gty" or a specific cabin assignment, and whether you are repeat cruisers, or first time cruisers.
The best bit of advice is to book a cat. you are happy with and not rely on free upgrades.....and/or where possible, book early so you can choose your cabin.

Addictive ! Tell me about it, we thought we would try a Disney Cruise a couple of years ago and to be honest I didn't fancy it, although I (we) love Disney/Florida/America,it was my my wife who wanted to cruise, so we booked, and loved it, since then we have told all our friends who have also been going to Orlando for a few years to try the cruise and they also love it!

What a great upgrade ........that is the sort of upgrade we all dream about :spin:
....looking back at my post I think I was a bit negative in my response (probably due to my own experience :( )
Free upgrades are normally to be celebrated ...and yours is truly worth celebrating :mickeybou

Great news about the upgrade. We have booked for a Cat 8 on 27th Sept cruise. (Is there a big diffrence price wise from a cat 11 to a cat 8?) i spoke to dreams last week and they were trying to upgrade us to verandah room for $200 but I didn't take it. Not sure about DS age 6 and a Verandah. He likes to climb!!!! Maybe they'll gives us it anyway if they are trying to get rid of them. Never know your luck ;) Don't really want to change as I've got all my Stateroom door magnets done with our room number on them so that if anyone wants to nick them :( they can't display them on their door!!!

Hi Jackie
I will email you tonight but 200 dollars for verandah room sound good but on med. cruise we were asking for upgrade before we were on the cruise as they told us that 1,500 pounds not dollars!! more and we said forget it. Cannot afford again for May 08, we stay on Cat 9 Deck 2.
But I think you better stay in where you are because if verandah room that you will never be in all day as 3 days with 2 kids, you will have no time for it as you will be busy too. Cannot win?
