Hi
Just wondering if the internet access in the Disney Rooms is wireless. We are staying at the Port Orleans French Quarter
Thanks
No, it's wired. There's an ethernet socket in each room. Usage is $9.95 per 24 hour period.

They do supply a cable so no need to take one.

The rate is $9.95 for any 24 hour period. You pay for the next 24 hours from when you connect.

OK Thanks :)
If you do it, I'd be interested to know roughly how fast both the upload and download connection from the rooms is (www.speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net) is a quick way to get a good idea). Thanks, have a great time at Port Orleans.

I'd be interested to know whether its worth taking our laptop. We are staying at POR in November. We would just email home and the DIBB of course. We would use it for the kids to watch DVDs but may just buy a cheap DVD player if the internet access isn't great at POR.
I'll try to report on Disney resort internet speeds when I get back.

Just remembered this thread. I did some speed tests using the HSIA at the Beach Club and at POR using www.speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net). Both gave a pretty reliable 1 Mbps download (which would mean somewhere around 100 kilobytes per second in real world terms) and 300+ kbps upstream (so I'd guess that's running at 384kbps).
Out of interest, the Beach Club's ethernet connector gave me a 100Mbps LAN link on the lappy, while POR only gave me 10Mbps.
On the cable front by the way, there's a little cloth bag containing a shortish ethernet cable in each room - it was hung in the wardrobe, on a coat hanger. The label says that it's for guest use, but that there will be a $10 charge if you remove it from the room.

I used the wireless there - it was okay. I'm not sure any of the broadband/wireless on property is super fast, but better than dial-up.
Though $10 is very pricey per day.

VERY. Especially considering that more and more hotels are offering it for free these days. Disney have sub-contracted it out to a company called SmartCity, so that's presumably why the extra cost. And the wireless service at Disney hotels is from a different company, so if you want both the in-room HSIA and also wireless, you have to pay twice.
Is Wi-Fi access at Wide World of Sports still free by the way?

I knew someone who once worked at Smart City, we visited a building on property (where he worked) where operators were taking phone calls for the various resorts. I thought that the wireless also came up as Smart City, though I only have used it a couple of times from Fort Wilderness (last week). I barely think of Smart City as separate from Disney since they are on property.
I haven't been over to the WWOS in a long time, I didn't know they had free wi-fi! I just tried looking online, but don't see anything about that by Googling (I only looked for a minute).

There you go then Denise, that's a challenge for your next walkabout! :)

I'm not even sure where to walk there. :) I'll just carry the laptop and see if I can get a signal!
