I don't want to waste my time on holiday looking for bits for other people, 3 people have asked me now if I could buy some things for them. The thing is I find it hard to say no. Plus it takes up precious luggage space. Sorry vent over :mad2:

You could say that you're already bringing back stuff for other people and don't have any more room in your case. Or be really naughty and say you couldn't find the things they asked you for.....

It can be a pain shopping for other people

Sorry. Guilty as charged. I have just done it to a colleague who went to Vegas. I wanted a CSI t-shirt and he kindly got me one. Thanks Richard :thumbs-up I did stress only to get me one if he came across one and not to go on a t-shirt hunt. I am sit here in it now typing this

Same here - about 10 people in work have asked me to bring things back, ranging from aerial toppers, which I don't mind, to a pal mickey! As already said, it's the precious space in the suitcase that's the problem.

we are always buying some thing for other people - definitely not so easy now with the meagre allowance though

This is my pet hate, some-one asked me to get them Rockports a couple of years ago!!
Why should i need to use my luggage allowance for other people, so now i am prepared for people asking and would say, "im sorry id love to but im buying so much for myself i wont have room".

We bring stuff back for family if they ask, because they do for us when they go. But if other people ask we just see how much room we have left in our suitcase at the end of the holiday, if we don't have any we just say we could'nt find it....

I can understand your point of view however, I am the opposite. I have a modest shopping list for other people and am very excited to be shopping for others. I even offered on the dibb asking for anyone needing anything, LOL!

We are not going until next may and already have been asked for a fair few bits.

I am happy to pick up bits and bobs but not go on a major expedition to find stuff

Luckily though it is mainly peanut butter m & M's and hersheys hugs n kisses. I wonder how many packs I can get in one case!! :d:

Last time we went a friend of my Mums asked us to buy a bottle of certain St Ives body lotion out there. We looked in Walgreens & Publix, but couldn't find the one she wanted. When we told her, instead of saying never mind, we got 'you can't have been looking properly' . That's the last time I try to help someone.

I normally buy a couple of 'smallish' things for friends if asked but this time I've decided not to - the allowance is so miniscule I'm not going to waste any of it!

Got to admit it drives me crazy when people ask....i've had neighbours ask for timberland boots....baby clothes etc etc....you want cheap American shopping...then go book your own holiday

just been for 3 weeks and took 2 extra empty suitcases on the way out for my 2 DD's shopping list
managed to bring back

1 pair Timberlands
1 pair Converse
various T-shirts

6 large packets chips ahoy cookies(double choc)

and 8 (yes eight!) boxes of lucky charm cereal

took the lucky charms out of their boxes-god knows what the customs would have thought if they'd searched me!

I would've said well I couldn't be bothered looking hard because I was too busy enjoying MY holiday so next time go yourself, you $%^&*

I so know this problem! Ive been asked by several people to get them things. To make it worse they haven't offered any money and have just said...bring me back a bargain! They have even told me how much room I will have in my case and how few clothes I must take!

70 kilos or not I am keeping it all to myself. Just politely say no room sorry.

I don't usually mind bringing little things that are easy to find but there is nothing more annoying than spending ages trawling shops for something particular someone wants.

I just say now "well if I see one on my travels I will get it but I can't promise". I also say that if it takes me over my allowance, they may have to repay me the customs charge if I get caught!!! ;)

I wouldnt get loads of stuff for anyone, cheeky blighters to ask if you ask me!

I dont mind the odd thing for close friends or family but thats it. I barely have room for all the stuff I buy for myself!

I did ask my friend whose going tomorrow to bring me back some cheetos, if she has time to get them & space in her suitcase to bring them back.

I've decided next time we are shopping for ourselves.

A few years ago I bought back some timberland boots for my friend, decided they weren't what they wanted afterall and have never worn them.

On the most recent trip I bought an ariel dress & accessories for a friends DD as it's for Christmas as you can't get it here, also a colleage's wife takes medication which you can only get in the USA, I offered to get these things as I didn't mind, but then everyone started jumping on the bandwagon....I had to politely say no as we wanted to bring back some bits ourselves.

our friends asked us if we could track down a cheap laptop for their son....
eh no! i'm paying for double baggage for ME not for anyone else! i don't really DO shopping, i certainly don't do shopping for anyone else. we brought these same people bacardi back last time and when i gave them the receipt they weren't happy because it had been on offer in one of the supermarkets here cheaper!
someone i work with also asked us to bring back cigars, you only get a basic allowance in the USA and as everyone in our families smoke apart from us, it was a real pain. never again.

I don't mind the odd bit if it's convenient for us to get. Last trip we got some park maps for people - no prob getting those. We also got a couple of MVMCP special pins for someone who asked very nicely. We were getting them for ourselves anyway so again no probs. We're always nipping to World of Disney so arial toppers and the like are easy to pick up.

It's when people start asking us to do special trips to get their Nikes and their Timberland boots that the hand goes up and the No comes out.

i've been placed in a similar position many times over by the sis in law, she presumes i will run about picking her up all those bits n pieces she forgot on the last trip out, does she give me any money in advance , well hell no

i'm getting all prepared for our next trip with some good advice from this topic i'm going to mention the excess duty, the reduced luggage allowance and the "i will if i'm passing but cannot promise you"

then i can spend the entire holiday with no intention of getting anything on her list (leave the list at home to make sure) and enjoy MY HOLIDAY ;)

i've been taken for a mug many times so it's long overdue but time to stand up to this particular sis in law

In April my MIL bought some brightly coloured, metal fish ornament things that you hang up, she's got them in her garden and they look lovely. Anyway, she bought them from some place on the coast and she's asked me to bring some back for her. We're not going to the coast this time, which I told her but she said they sell them everywhere yet when asked where in the Orlando area she said she didn't have a clue.

I can tell you, that I for one will not be looking and even if I do see them, she can have one which I'll keep for her for Christmas but the rest of my allowance is going on Christmas shopping for the kids (and maybe a few things for myself ;) )
