Thinking of trying Portugal for next summer any suggestions on the best resorts/hotels to stay. Looking at the Thompson Gold Falesia Hotel. Anyone been? Don't mind if it's a bit on the quiet side

I asked a very similar question back in 2003 regarding the Falesia hotel on another website, because Expedia were having a sale and the hotel was coming up very cheap.
The answers that I got was that it is an excellent hotel, not far from the beach but not really close to anything else of note. I think it is about 3 miles to Albufeira.
In the end we stayed at the Perola De Algarve in Albufeira itself and quite liked it. As it is in between both new town and old town, you get the best of both worlds really.
The 2nd time we went to Portugal we stayed at the Maritim Hotel in Sao Rafael, which was a lovely hotel but absolutely miles away from Albufeira itself (8-10 euros each way in a cab). The fact that we paid just £9 per night, yes that is right £9 per night meant that we spent far more on transportation than we did on the accommodation itself.
I've always liked the look of the Paraiso in Albuferia centre.
Hope this helps a bit.

Acoteias, where the Falesia is situated is one of my favourite parts of the Algarve it is wonderfully peaceful with gorgeous beaches. The Falesia is next to the Pine Cliffs Resort, and if you hire a car you ar within easy reach of more major resorts such as Vilamoura etc.
It really does look just ike the picture in the Thomson brochure my own attempt at a pic taken this August, is below
Personally I would avoid Albufeira itself, particularly if you are looking for somewhere more quiet

I would also avoid Albuferia. Very touristy with loads of Brits bars etc. Villamoura is much classier.

Thanks for that information alijolly but wondered if you've actually stayed at The Falesia. Is it any good, foodwise, entertainment etc. ?I've stayed Thomson Gold in Cyprus and it was superb.

We have 3 children so haven't stayed there although we have stayed at Pine Cliffs. We met people on the beach who were staying there and they were really happy with it, they were particularly impressed with the food which was buffet style but of a high standard. I don't know about the entertainment, when we were there Lionel Ritchie was playing Pine Cliffs and people from Falesia came to the hotel to watch.
Sorry I can't be more help, but from what we saw we would definitely stay there when we manage child free holidays again!

Cheers, alijolly that's been very helpful. Pine cliffs looks expensive but really, really nice.

Alvor is a great fishing village, full of bars and restaurants but not loud music, and not sure if there are any clubs, but sure there must be if you look. The food is fantastic, with fish being the speciality, but loads more as well to choose from. Its lovely to walk round in the evenings. It is the more quiet end of the holiday market, but not deathly. Cant comment on places to stay as we had a villa, there are loads of great ones out there and driving from the airport is so easy and only about 45 minutes tops on a direct road. I have been twice and both times spent a day at Villamoura, other than the Marina which is full of restaurants i didnt see too many other places i would like to eat but possibly because there is another part to it that we didnt get to, but it is lovely and the yachts, cruisers!!! shouldnt be allowed for people to have so much money.

Hi
Went to Portugal in May for the first time for my 40th. We were a group of 10 females (no hubbies or kids allowed). We stayed in Albuferia at Boa Vista Hotel and Spa. We loved the hotel although we had hired a minibus and was out every day. A few of us are beauty therapists but wanted some pampering for ourselves. The massage by Sergio was fantastic ( You had to close your eyes and imagine he was George Clooney ) but his hand were fantastic, we wanted to bring him home would definately recommend this hotel, it was very quiet and I must admit we only strolled to the square a couple of times as we spent most evenings in with several drinks and a pack of cards. It depends what you are looking for we wanted to relax and be pampered I admit we were loud on occasions but everyone was very friendly and we had a laugh and joke with the staff, who were very efficiant. They were also very helpful wth advising us where to go for days out. I loved it and have promised to take hubbie there
