View Full Version : Boston Advice - There and Flight
Hi
We've just booked flights with VA to go to Boston in Feb for a weekend on our way to Orlando.....
Does anyone have any advice for me on the city ? I'll be travelling with my husband and 7 year old.
Also, am booked in Pe with VA but its an A340 (or is it A380), have never flown on one of these before and can't decide which seats to book (have checked vflyer and doesn't help!!) - does anyone have experience of PE on these aircraft (ex LHR)??
As ever all comments gratefully received
Thanks
Lisa

Yes!! Wrap up warm :D
Fantastic city, very compact so easy to walk. Excellent subway system and the best shopping. Recommend a visit to Quincy Market, this is the closest to home American City there is.
A must do if you are interested in a bargain is Filene's department stores bargain basement, basically if an item does not sell in the normal store within 4 weeks it goes down to the basement and is reduced to 75%, if it is still there on week 6 it is reduced to 50% and the next week 25% and then finally given to charity

My very fave city in the world
Where are you staying? If you've not yet booked somewhere we'd highly recommend the Parker House Hotel - right in the heart of everything - on the Freedom Trail, 3 mins to the T (trains to take you all over the place, but most places in Boston are reasonable walking distance); 5 mins walk to Filenes, Macy's etc, Quincy Market. . .
You must do the Duck Tour - excellent for all the family (the kids have a go at driving them).
Lucky you - enjoy :d:

The Duck tour is fantastic but won't be running in February as there is a good chance the Charles River will be frozen. It really will be very cold and a good chance it could be snowy. Nevertheless Boston is a wonderful city and there is so much to do. Bostons childrens museum is a fantastic hands on experience and the aquarium is good too.

I would also recommend the Duck tour if it is running!
You should have a walk around Beacon Hill area. Start at state house and meander through the streets until you get to Charles Street.
A lovely view of the city from one of the many boat trips.
We stayed at the Marriot Copley Place which is attached to lovely mall and across from the Cheesecake factory. (There is a footbridge, so no need to go out into the cold!)
Newbury street is a lovely walk and of course Quincy Market and Fanuiel Hall is a must.

We enjoyed Boston. We went in December and there was heavy snow everywhere.
Definitely take your warm clothes (and shoes) as its a great place to walk around.

Hi Ya
A trip out to Salem is pretty cool, you can do this with either an organised tour or by train. Obviously things like the witch museum may be a bit intense for a 7 year old, but the little town is really quite pretty and has some nice shops to mooch about in.

I would give another vote for the children's museum. Also the main park may have ice skating on it. There is the "freedom trail" which takes you around the main historical sites of Boston which is great for a first time visitor.

We flew there in Feb this year with VH I'll ask the others what the plane was, if it is the same one better to have window seats as there was definately more room than in the middle four, lots of teenagers on our flight who were going ski-ing.
Chilly but no snow in Boston but we had very heavy snow on the 14th Feb in New Hampshire.
Sorry just read that you are in PE, the economy seats were quite nice and a good tv system that was like a video recorder, much better plane than we normally have from Manchester to Orlando with VH.

Get a guide book and follow the freedom trail - the best thing is seeing 17th century houses (common here) juxtaposed against utterly modern sky scrapers.
Go up the Hancock Tower.
Food at Quincy Market. Shopping at LL Bean for those warm clothes you will need.
