Hi, I will be going to New York on the 31st Oct.
I have got all my 'must do's' on a list, and bought a few tickets on line.
But I am unsure how to do Ground Zero, for those of you that have been, did you just go there by yourself, or did you take a tour?
Any info appreciated.
Thanks Jean

I didn't know you could get a 'tour' of Ground Zero??

We just made our way down there for ourselves, most people that were there seemed to be in their own groups and I didn't see anything that looked like tours or tour guides.

Sorry, I haven't been much help :confused2

Hi Jean

When were were there in December 2005, we took the Grey Line open top bus tours. There is a stop on this tour near to Ground Zero, and we got off there and walked over to it.
Hope this helps....

We caught the subway to Ground Zero. I wasn't going to go to be honest, but it was deeply moving and I am glad we went.

I have read that there is a tour included with the musuem, also with a New York guide, all advertised on the web.
Just wondered if anybody had done them?

You can walk down to Gound Zero, there is a exibition there and you can book guided tours with one of the survivours. We visited the site but didn't see the exibition or do the tour, I think it was a bit upsetting for DW, I must admit I felt the same.

your going 31 Oct, might see ya there then we are thinking of booking

anyway we went to ground zero this july we went on our own and just walked around the site perimeter, it was a very somber feeling. for your intrest there is a 9/11 visitors center to the south of ground zero and i was an interesting area to view and again it plucked a few heart strings. if you see the visitors centre, stand looking at it and to your right there is a fire station i think its engine 10 who sadly lost 5 memebrs on 9/11 and to the right of that down the side street is the very large and long brass plaque in memory of those fire fighters who lost their lives. here is a couple of picture is took

if you are interested in the 9/11 event then i would recommend a visit to the fire mueseum they have an area dedicated to theose brave souls. also to give you and insite i have done a trip report about our visit to New york one thing is we loved the big apple so much we want to go back

i would deffinetly recommend the bus tours, they are so easy to get on and off where you want. we did the central park and north tour as we had already seen most of the financial district areas

It was reading your trippie originally that made me want to do the fire museum tour you made it sound so worthwhile, so we will definitly be doing that.
I just cannot make my mind up about Ground Zero.
Thanks for your help.

When we went we took the subway as DH wanted say he'd been on it.
The emotional feelings at ground zero are hard to explain and every one is moved in their own way.
I would say go as you will be surprised at the peace that is there (you cant even hear the taxis and it is so silent.......hard to explain in words)

After getting off the ferry from seeing the Statue of Liberty, we walked there from Battery Park. It wasn't far at all and as everyone has said, it is extremely moving.

If you do get a chance to visit Battery Park whilst you're there, it's worth taking a look at "The Sphere" and the Eternal Flame which was erected in Battery Park a short while after 9/11, as a memorial to all those who perished that day. It's called the Icon of Hope. That, too, really tugs at your heartstrings and it's amazing to note that this monument was originally in the plaza of the Twin Towers and survived the collapse of the buildings!! :omg: Although it was damaged, it remained almost intact, which is amazing!

i know what you mean, i spent ages standing there thinking whilst looking at it and realising how the world has changed since that fateful day

and this is also in Battery park, its a memorial to the 2WW dead

sorry have only just caught up with this thread but wanted to say we have been to new york twice once in 2005 and again in feb this year we did a quick trip to ground zero the 1st time, this time we did a guided tour of the site, it is based in the vistors center and is all done by people who were involved some way or another, and is all done voluntery. we had a ladie who lived across the street and a fireman as our tour guides it something we all enjoyed and learned from i would do it again
i hope this helps alittle

Do they still have memorial stuff at the church across the road? I went to NYC a year after 9/11 and they had lots of stuff like pictures, tributes etc in the church across the road, not a dry eye left that place. I always visit Ground Zero when ever i go to NYC, just to pay my respects and as Gaz said, just to reflect on how much the world has changed since then.
