:confused2 I cannot get my head round the ADR concept. How do you know what you want to eat on what day months in advance?
But, I diverse, my question is - can you just walk-in to restaurants in the parks and take a chance on a table or is it all ADRs?

You can take the chance of a walk-up but especially this year we've seen loads of people turned away or given return times hours away. There are not many restaurants where you could expect to walk up and get a table unless you go at a very quiet time of year. Being turned away or having a long wait is not great if you are hungry now and waiting for a table or finding another restaurant can use up a lot of your precious theme park time.
Guest relations will have a list of availability for all the restaurants so it may be easier to visit there and see what's available rather than trek around the park looking for somewhere to eat. If all else fails you can settle for counter service but may still have a wait.
ADRs are easy to make and easy to cancel or change if you find they don't fit with your plans on the day, so worth the effort of a little advance planning IMHO. We make a rough draft of which park on which day and try to get ADRs in that general area. There is always some swapping around later on.

we've never booked anything, and always just rock up when we want to eat. the longest we've waited waw 1/2 for the rainforest cafe, dtd and i didn't think that was too bad as we just wandered round their shop. although i don't think you could just turn up for a character meal

Really depends on the restaurant you want, the time you want to eat and the time of year you go. :)

plan speical meals by using a wish list....such as CRT crystal palace mbybbq etc and work them into some sort of order to fit in your plans. that the way we worked out where we wanted to eat this year
