View Full Version : food shopping?
We will either go to costco or walmart for food shopping but would like to know how do u work out what food u will buy ie for the week, we always plan our weekly meals here and we are only eating out maybe 4/5 times during the 2 weeks so will be buying stuff for sandwiches etc making meals etc
also what is the bread like there? is it same as ours and is it worth making my own or is there somewhere i can buy that will be just as good as uk, also sugar free drinks as son has diabetes.
i have visions of me going in food shopping and spending too much money there:omg:
any tips on food shopping/budgeting would be really helpful

we tend to go to publix as it is not as vast as walmart so not as intimidating!! bread can sometimes be tricky as the only stuff that tastes like our bread is more expensive than the us stuff that tastes very sweet. (about $1-$1.50 a loaf though so still very cheap). one time we went we bought stuff for breakfast and sandwich making stuff for dd and spent about $60 in 2 weeks. we did a little plan (ie. need a certain number of lunches so a certain amount of bread and fillings) but still bought too much cos i just wanted to try stuff we don't have here (cheese flavoured popcorn anyone!!)
We usually only eat out once a day as we find you get tired of restaurants 2 or 3 times a day. It is not much more to eat out as to eat in if you pick your restaurants. The bread in the US as Katie says is not like ours, we find best to stick to the likes of the French or Cuban bread (look like a Vienna rolls). I also find it is hard to judge how much you will eat, as in the hot weather we don't tend to eat as much, so now only shop for a about 4/5 days at a time, but having said that I like to go to the shops in the early morning by myself.

Apart from the basics, beer, water, cereals, the food is much better in Publix.
We are never able to plan more than about 2-3 days in advance with our shopping.
