Hi All
Just wanted to know if anyone has been to any of the Canary Islands in January and if so what the weather was like?
I'm wanting to get away after xmas but want to go some where with guaranteed sun.
Thanks

My friend has been in January and said it was hot enough to sunbathe during the day but she did need a light jacket on at night.

Oh not what i wanted to hear :nonono: We are off to Tenerife for New Year.
From what i can gather its nice and sunny during the day(I hope) and cardi/jacket for a night.
Ive already started checking the weather on here www.accuweather.com
Was in Lanzarote at the end of January this year and it literally was FREEZING. :erm:
We had rain almost everyday , very little sun , the evenings were thick jacket weather and at night with no heating in the hotel brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. We did have 2 days of warm weather - Around 20c or so and that was warm enough for a bit of a tan.
With prices of Carribean hols being cheapy at the mo ( Like Csisson has done ) - I think I'd rather pay the small amount extra.. But if you don't fancy the long flight.
Saw a fab deal on Thomas cook TV other night - £499 All inclusive Dom Rep for end of the year. :wavey: HTH.
P.S Wanna take me with ya ?
i went to tenerife in jan and it was ok but a bit windy and chilly. warmer than here but not really swimming weather. It woudl be good with little kids though cos you dont want it too hot.
If youre going to lie in the sun, I'd rethink your destination.

it tends to get cold in January and can be wet but each island can vary
Went to Gran Canaria in January a couple of years ago and it was a lot colder than we expected! Very windy, 3 days of rain and to top it all the hotel pool wasn't heated! It was warmer than the UK though!

The one and only time we've been to the Canary Islands was Lanzarote in March 1993 - last holiday without kids. It was overcast when we got there and we wondered why people would lay by the pool in such weather...then we found out that it was the nicest day for a week. Next day it poured down, and didn't stop until we left a week later (it snowed on Tenerife). And I know many many people who have had the same experience in the winter/spring period. Unfortunately, no-one had mentioned these experiences at the time we booked!
i do think the canaries can be misrepresented as year round sun, although you can get lucky too.
The best island is tenerife in terms of weather - lanzarote and fuerty are the most unreliable for sun.

we went to tenerife for xmas and new year and it was beautiful sunshine for 2 weeks .. temperatures were around 25 each day and i came home lovely and brown .. nights were slightly cooler but this was back in 1998
we did Furteventura in January in 1997. It was warm during the day but cold at night, we had to buy sweatshirts, and needed an extra blanket on the bed as the bungalow was unheated and distinctly chilly.

We have been going to the Canaries in January/February for the last couple of years.
Most years the weather has been lovely, it can be very hot during the day but cool at night.
The weather can be very hit and miss. We went to Tenerife for 2 weeks last February and it was beautiful every day, however the year before we were in Gran Canaria and it was cold and rained on most days.
Over the years the weather has become more changeable and unfortunately we have seen less of a guarantee of hot weather, which is shame. It doesn't put us off going though, its lovely to have some sun in the winter!

My sister in law lives in Lanzarote and always tells us how hot and wonderful it is over there at Christmas, so we booked to go over and see them early January 2003. They had hailstones (they haven't seen them on the island for 50 years) it was cold and not a lot to do as they didn't heat the pools it was too cold to go swimming. My husbands famly are going to Lanzarote in January 2008 but I have told them to count me out I don't do Lanzarote in January. I agree with Ste much rather be in Dom Rep (maybe because I haven't been)
