I have just ordered a 17 inch Acer Gemstone from Tesco Direct. 399 (reduced from 599) with a discount if you buy through Quidco. I used a 500 point code as well for more points. It's not arrived yet so I can't say how good it is.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I believe you can get one for under £400. I've had mine for about a year and have had no problems with it.

DD recently bought an Acer for under £400 wi-fi enabled and seems like a good little machine so far. Nice and light if he wants it to be portable.
