they'll all play the same games so don't worry in the respect. The Elite's the top model in that it has a bigger hard drive, HDMI port (so you can connect it straight to a high def TV via a HDMI lead) and...erm...it's black...oh yes, it's got wifi built in were the others don't and one or two other accessories/extras.
The only difference between the premimum and the core is the bundle of accessories you get with it - the core's just the console and wired controllers were as the premimum has all you need to get online and onto xbox live straight out of the box...ie. wifi connector, hard drive, headset and wireless pads...and a DVD style remote control for films etc...
The premimum and core packs might be cheaper now as the elite's the top dog...other than that there's no real difference and a 360 game will play on any of these...it's really just a case of different extras.

If your son just wants to play 1 player games get him the CORE.
If he wants to play single player games & play online against others arround the world get him the PREMIUM.
If he wants to do both the above, d/l alot of content, has HDMI connection on the TV, likes the colour black then get him the ELITE
I'm a pretty serious gamer, and I have the PREMIUM. Even without HDMI cable, connected up to a HD TV the picture is superb and imo the PREMIUM would be perfect for your son :-)
 Hiya thanks to you both, at least i know what to look out for and what to buy him(if he is good :d: :d: )so here goes with the old credit card(or should i say hubbys) :d: :d: cheers :pd

Just a quick update some newer games require the harddrive or the premium

The elite doesn't have built in wifi. You still have to buy the wireless adapter for it.
I bought a premium not long after release and upgraded to an elite on release day for the extra hard disk space.
Even if your son does only want to play single player games I would recommend staying away from the core system - the hard drive is an absolute must for saved games and is a more reliable storage system than the expensive (when compared mb for mb) with the memory modules.
I would take advantage of the upcoming Xmas bundles and get him the premium console, unless he has a HDTV or you don't mind paying the extra for the bigger hard disk on the elite.
As others have said, Elite if you can afford it, premium if not, avoid the core.
Hope that helps :)

yes...sorry, the elite doesn't have built in wifi which is a bizzare omission considering the elite pack has a headset and hard drive which are both needed for online play. The Elite's billed as microsoft's answer to the PS3 which has hdmi and wifi built in...so why they then left wifi out is most odd...still, no real reason to buy an elite even if you have a HD tv - mine's conected via component and you can also connect via vga - both of which give a HD picture...

That bundle is quite good value yeah, if your son doesn't want the three games that are included though its a bit of a waste - shops like GAME will often let you pick and choose the games for your bundle, well worth a trip down.
Sorry if I caused any offence Kryten, none was intended whatsoever :)
Wireless isn't a big issue for me, I have it cabled into my router using the inbuilt network card anyway - much more reliable for media streaming too, wireless can be a bit iffy sometimes. I had my premium plugged into the TV via VGA and was using 1920x1080 before I got the elite, now I'm using HDMI and 1080p and notice a considerable difference in colour depth - colours seem much more vibrant through HDMI, just my experience anyways.
I've got a PS3, a wii and a 360, the PS3 is used pretty much as a blu ray player only, the online stuff pales into insignificance when compared to the 360 - hopefully that will change over the next 12 months when there are some good proprietry software titles released. The wii is good for when you have friends round :)
