My DMIL just bought herself a new laptop and it came preloaded with Vista.

She wants my help putting all her stuff back on it but I have never even seen Vista!

Anyone know if there is a great difference between XP and Vista and if there is, any kind of cheat sheet for the "translations"

Tips, tricks, advice about traps all welcome!

Help!

I also have a new laptop with vista. Not much difference that i have noticed. My only gripe is I use BT yahoo and it does not work as good as with xp.

Vista can look very different from XP in places but for the main part and for 99% of users who don't play around with the control panel and advanced settings they won't notice much of a difference.

For putting files and folders back onto it from an old pc theres not much diference. My Documents no longer exists - theres a user file now named after the logged in user which contains a documents folder, a pictures folder etc. Stored slightly differently on the hard disk but nothing to really concern yourself with :)

How are you going to transfer the stuff from the old machine? a USB memory stick?

In terms of re-installing her old programs, most should work if they're fairly new, you might have to fiddle around with some of them to get them working and some might not work at all but deal with that hurdle if and when you arrive at it.

Good luck and if you need any help just ask :)

no not must difference but one good thing is when copy all your data to vista is it puts docs in a docs folder, photos in the photos folder and music in the music folder automatically, pretty neat eh!! :)

some things are in different places and called different names front end is a bit different, searching for programs is easy just type in the search field and it finds it as you spell it out
