View Full Version : Has anyone been to Philadelphia?

We are thinking of including Philadelphia into a New York/Philly itinerary for next Mar/April time, probably splitting it either 5 nights in NY and 3 in Philadelphia or 4 and 4.

Flights are very reasonable around Easter, just £300 return and that includes flying into NY and out of Philly.

Question is, has anyone been? What is it like? We have been recommended the Society Hill to stay which is close to the Historic District but also within walking distance of the main city centre.

We will get the train from NY which takes about 1.5 hours and are up for some classic sightseeing, shopping (might be better in NY) and just generally strolling around.

We have done a lot of the major cities in the USA but Philly escaped us on our RTW trip last year. We have been to NY but not since 9/11, so that is going to feel like a new city to be honest.

Any comments greatly appreciated as always.

Cheers

I used to live fairly near Philly and have been a few times, it's a very nice city - one of my favorites.
There is a beautiful historic district, and a lot of historic sites. When I last went with DH we didn't have a lot of time, so we took one of those bus tours around the city and saw loads.
You are also not terribly far from Amish country if you fancy something completely different.

Must see the Liberty Bell and I second what Bev says about Amish country. Just fascinating :)

We have done a lot of the major cities in the USA.......

In that case you have already done Philadelphia.
There isn't much there to set it apart from Anytown USA. Nothing bad to say about it ... if you watch Cold Case you will see the sights.
We stayed at the Sofitel which was great.
There is probably somewhere more interesting to combine with NYC, or just stay longer in NYC ?
We enjoyed it but wouldn't make a point of going there to be honest.
