Vegas via New York

Hoping to spend some time in Vegas next April and want to split the trip with a couple of nights in NY on the way.

I'd like to book the internal flights separately with a low cost US carrier. Anyone with any experience of doing this or some info on US internal carriers?

I did this last year but found it cheaper to have the NYC as a stopover for three days then spending 3 days in vegas flying back to Manchester via NYC from Vegas. I tried to book it all separately but it was cheaper to book as a stopover with airline network
