After my computer blew up recently I bought a new one with Windows Mail 6 instead of Outlook Express. It says it is no longer possible to have my Hotmail messages downloaded into it :(

Is that correct?

Is there anything I can do?

Thanks

Strictly speaking no you can't, they made all Hotmail accounts web access only. Having said that there is a little application you can use to access Hotmail accounts on your favourite email client, it's called FreePOPS (http://www.freepops.org/en/), in fact it will work on any web based account.

Give me a minute and I'll post you some instructions. I've got to compile them, don't worry it's not difficult.

To start:

On the Outlook Express Tools menu, click Accounts.

Click the Mail tab, and then double-click your email account you want to use FreePOPs on.

Click the Advanced tab.

Where it says Incoming mail (POP3) type localhost, like the example below:

Then click on the Advanced tab and in the Incoming mail (POP3) replace the 110 with 2000, then click Apply, OK and try that.

It sees the messages 'says receiving 1 out of 125' but will not download them :(

I tried this on my system and it's not working, sometimes Hotmail change their system and programs like FreePOPs stop working till they bring out another patch for it, so it looks like this is what's happened. Sorry, it was worth a try.

Hi,

I recently downloaded Windows Mail onto my PC - this is very similar to Outlook express. This now lets me download all my Hotmail messages onto it (without the need of going to the site) it also downloads my Yahoo mail and other personal mail accounts.

It's really easy to use to, I just click on an icon on my desktop and it launches and automatically downloads all my new messages. Then when I get a new mail it beeps and tells me.

I got this from visiting the Microsoft site - just search for windows mail - it also works alongside windows live messenger.

Hope that helps (it's what I use as an alternative to Outlook)

Windows mail is just the latest version of outlook express

so really shouldnt be a reason that you cant get the emails you always used to

My guess is its to do with your configuration settigs for your accounts within windows mail

trying googling for help along the lines of hotmail settings for windows mail etc
