I was looking at the Ipod Nano or else the shuffle and wondered has anyone bought one in Florida. I know the difference in price is not a lot, but with the shuffle can you decide what songs to do in order or do they just play randomly.

Is the Ipod definately better than other MP3's or are they much of a muchness.
Thanks

A colleague ahas just given away her ipod, she's so frustrated with the Apple itunes software (she's very computer literate)

Apple have crippled the machines with rights management, if you are prepared to accept that and only source stuff from Apple you should be ok.

They look pretty, no denying it. However, I'd argue that any decent make, in fact most makes, are better. Try Archos, iRiver or Creative. Avoid Sony as they are even worse than Apple - they've actually damaged people's computers in their over zealous attempts at copyright protection.

I really like my ipod, and I don't mind iTunes at all.

It's not necessary to source everything from Apple, I get a lot of stuff from other sources ;) and I just put them into a folder and then import the folder into itunes and it works fine.

I know someone who uses Windows Media Player with her ipod, and I have also used RealPlayer as well, if fact it works very well with the ipod.

I would get a Nano - they now have a screen and you can watch videos on them as well.

Katie has a shuffle, and you can either play them in order, or in random mode but you can't choose a track (other than to fast forward past the current one if you don't like it)

My DH has been researching one for me (I need it for specific applications at work as well as for my own use) and he has basically said to avoid iPods. He has recommended Creative Zen and Sandisk Sansa. As I say, he has been researching with my needs in mindbut it might give you a place to start looking for alternatives.

If its something just to play tunes on then I would go for an MP3 not Ipod (i'm another that gave up with Itunes  ...Its just too much hassle)

For video as well Archos are great :thumbs-up

Yes it is really just for tunes and probably not a lot to be downloaded as I will probably put my own cd's onto. I liked the Nano as you seem to be able to put photos on as well and a movie or 2 (not that I would prob watch a movie on it)

DS has the nano, but his phone has better picture display for photo's. Ipods look great, but so do Samsungs IMHO
