Just received my goodies from Disney Online. UPS tried to deliver it yesterday and I found a note through my letter box. On the note it said they wanted £60 import duty payable in CASH. I rang UPS to rearrange delivery and query why it was £60 for import duty. The operator told me it was only £30 and I could pay over the phone on my credit card, which I did. Please question your import duty before you pay it to the courier, I wouldn't have had £60 cash in the house but if I had I would have probably paid it and not queried it because it was my first time

Its is not just the import duty, UPS will have included a fee for collecting the money from you

Delivery companies don't usually let drivers collect cash for safety reasons.

Well it said cash on delivery. It said no cheques accepted. It was only because I had to reorganise delivery that I questioned the £60 charge.
What was the order value (including postage costs)?

It was $180 of which $40 was postage. When I rang the company they said it was £30 of which £12 was admin charge

UPS are really bad we had to pay £70 on a $175 order in duty complete rip off, when they used Fedex it was a lot cheaper

Your package should have a 'cash on delivery' sticker on it which will show how much you need to pay, you should always check that before handing over any money.

We had that too - £60 to pay for delivery of a gold chain. We had been told all the costs were included in the P&P but then were hit with this extra - I wasn't in so DH copped for it! Pretty irritating when you aren't warned about it - you do kind of feel that there is no option but to pay or you don't get the goods which you've already paid for!
Will be very careful in future about ordering when delivery is by courier.

All I got was a card through the door. I only queried it when I rang to re-arrange delivery. I asked why it was £60 and did it go on weight as I did have a three piece luggage set. He looked at his computer and said that it was only £30, half the price the man who tried to deliver it wanted. This was the first time I had bought anything from the USofA and had it delivered.

i deal with UPS on a daily basis at work, customers on our business park pay by cash, cheque or credit card, credit card payments have to completed by either ringing UPS with the details or completing it online. Most pay by cheque, but on occasions i have passed on up to £50 in cash to the driver( done on behalf of our customers) and received a receipt to be sent to the customer.
£60 seems a bit steep for a home delivery, suppose it depends on the size of the goods/package, as stated the package should have a C.O.D document attached which will state how much you need to pay.

The document was inside the box and it said £30 when I got it opened but I had already paid that on my credit card the day before.

the C.O.D document being IN the box seems strange, all the ones we deal are either ON the box or the drivers got them and once he gives me a copy , he places the originals on the box in a sticky clear envelope.
I will find out what the correct procedure is at work tomorrow and post the findings, may be a help to others in the future.

It should be stuck to the outside of the package so that the customer can see how much they need to pay, this doesn't sound right and I think I would be writing to UPS to let them know.
I've dealt with UPS for years and never had any problems until recently when they merged with Lynx and my deliveries are now coming by Lynx and not UPS. I would be interested to know if it was a UPS driver in the brown uniform or a Lynx driver.

I don't know what they were wearing as I wasn't at home when it was delivered. It wouldn't have mattered to me where the document was because I would have handed the £60 over, it was my first time  , as I would have assumed that was what it was. I only challenged it when I rang to rearrange delivery. I wouldn't have looked at the documents till later as I would have been too busy looking at my goodies. I will know next time because of what happened this time. Could have been an expensive mistake on my part although I would have rang them when I got round to reading the documentation.

We.'ve ordered $70 worth of things from USA. We paid £12 shipping. Will there be more to pay when it arrives? We've never ordered from USA before. Julie xxxxxxx

Yes you will have to pay import duty and an admin fee from whomever delivers it.

Do you have to pay this extra only if the parcel is over a certain ammount. Just had delivery of a parcel from usa which cost $40 and had nothing to pay at all

We use a lot of couriers at work, and I have also found that since UPS merged with Lynx they have completely lost the plot and are absolutely hopeless....
As a general rule, you ought to pay duty on any items over £18 which are imported, if they are sent by courier then you will pretty much always be charged, through the Royal Mail it's more hit and miss.

DM just ordered DVDs from Amazon.com - cost $90. The customs bill from Royal Mail is £16 - so about a 1/3 of the original cost.

spoke to our driver today, he says ups are sub-contracting out to other delivery drivers( as well as lynx) he looked surprised when i said the cod note was in the box, as far as he is concerned the note is ALWAYS on the outside of the box. he felt it sounded dodgy that a driver would do it that way.
have you contacted ups about their procedures?

We had the same problem! Had to pay an extra £100 COD when our snowglobes arrived! Was not impressed as we were told that there would be no extra costs.

I was just glad I only paid £30 instead of £60. I will now know the procedure if I buy anything again though :thumbs-up
Martin Lewis on his website has just done an article on buying gifts overseas.
He has included in the article a section about buying online with the hidden costs and how to get an american address by the use of forwarding companies for those suppliers who only deliver in the states.
