Beginning on January 1st 2008, all TS meals will have 18% gratuity added to all transactions regardless of party size, including those using a DDE card.

I just had this email too. I think it is good in a way as a couple of times in a hurry I have got confused on what I should be tipping with the DDE discount and ended up leaving the amount before discount plus 20% on the table. I left the guy in Brown Derby a tip of $37 by mistake. Hopefully this will make it easier (for those that tip but lets not go there!)

I think this will be a lot easier with the DDP as well seeing as gratuity is not included now.

Well, this will certainly be convenient. Partly I think this is good, though I'm not so keen on having it imposed on me. We usually leave between 18-20% anyway depending on the service, but I think it's the fact that my choice has been removed I'm less happy about
I know this makes me sound like a grumpy so-and-so, sorry!

Personally if the service was bad I'd deduct it from the bill. At least that way they know you were not happy rather than a meanie.

How will this work then Caron - as the DDP invoices are usually zero (apart from extras and from 1st Jan this will mean appetisers too)?
Does this mean you will get an invoice with your extras, wine etc on it PLUS what would have been the tip on the meal if you had paid for it?? :confused2

I believe it is only DDE and any parties of 6 or more. I'm pretty sure that this is NOT the case with DDP. Not as I understood it when it was first discussed (before and after the union vote) a few months back.

That sounds better (party of 4 here so I would say that ;) )

Yes Sue I think that will be it; any extras plus 18% gratuity PLUS 18% gratuity on the DDP meal. That will work fine with us as long as the server warrants 18% gratuity. The only time this year we would have left less than this was our meal our Mama Melrose.

It does make it easier and most of the time the service warrants 18% but I think if I had very poor service I'd query the bill and ask for the 18% to be removed and leave a lesser amount

That sounds ok to me too Caron :thumbs-up
Beats having to sit there, ask for a menu to price up 5 meals and then work out what 18% of that is to tip!! :erm:
I will have no qualms about telling them I'm not paying the gratuity if the service does not warrant it. Last time we were there, all the WDW restaurant service was fine or better.

I am not a cheapskate but is 18% not quite a large chunk.
I would usually do 10 - 15%.
Myself and DW are using the DDP in 2008 and i dont suppose i will mind paying 18% but i do not think it is right to just charge it.
If the server is going to get it anyway where is the incentive to provide a tipworthy service.
Does it apply to the DDP?

Could someone tell me what a dde card is and how do you get one.The DDE (Disney Dining Experience) card gives you up to 20% discount off table sevice meals for up to 10 people at a number of WDW eateries. It currently costs $65 and is available to Florida residents and AP holders.
To buy it you need the number from your AP or AP exchange certificate and at the minute you need to order it in advance of your trip - although I understand that later this year you can buy it from Guest Services.
The 18% inclusion does not bother me. We would normally leave between 15/20% so, as far as I'm concerned, the included gratuity is cancelled out by the dizzy so we're still saving! ;)

Does anyone know if the 18% gratuity will be worked out on the meal total before the 6% (or whatever the local rate is) sales tax is added? Someone once told me you should work out your tipping that way.

Someone once told me you should work out your tipping that way. We work it out from the total including tax but it doesn't matter - the result is the same either way.
EG -
$150 + 6% = £159 / $159 + 18% = $187.62
$150 + 18% = $177 / $177 + 6% = $187.62
