I know I'm gonna sound a bit dumb, but can anyone suggest how much to put on an Oyster card for a five day trip to London? The last time we were in London, you just paid at the tube station but my mate has told me it's much cheaper to get an Oyster card.
We'll be staying near Hangar Lane Tube Station and will be travelling to Wembley Stadium, central London and to Paddington Station for our train to Newport.
Would £20 be reasonable, or am I having a laugh?!! :erm:
We used the visitor oyster card last week and it does work out alot cheaper, we were there for 4 day's and I put £20 on each and I think we've got a couple of £ left on them.

It's meant to charge you less than what you would pay if you brought a paper daily travelcard, which is around £4.70 zones 1-4 off peak, it's more expensive for zones 1-6, think it's around £5.40, so i would aim for £5 per day if i were you, if you are travelling during off peak times, which is after 9:30am on a week-day.
You can set up Pay as you go with Auto top-up if you go through to the web site:
https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk/oyster/guest/guestProductConfig.do?method=display
That way you can set up how much you want to top it up each time it drops down to a level set be you.

I agree with ukdiva, about £5 a day sounds right. We were in London in Aug for 7 days and put £40 in total on the cards. We travelled in and out of Heathrow on them and then used them every day of the 7 days, most days after the 9.30am and we had around £5 left on the cards after 7 full days. We had to pay £3 each for the cards, I have held onto them and the money left on is good for up to 2 years, so we will reuse them next year probably.

thanks paul just not got around to it yet - no hurry not going till march!!
Thanks for posting this, we are going to London Feb half term. Just looked at the Oyster website and the Oyster Card charges £1.50 per one way trip in zone 1, whereas the cash fare is £4, so definitely worth getting. :thumbs-up

Thanks for all your help guys :thumbs-up I think I'll go for £20 initially and can always top it up by a few pounds for the last journey to Paddington, if need be.

You can also use the oyster card on the buses in London. We find it much more civilized to take a bus when you can. Obviously if you are in a hurry then take the tube. However on a Bus you see the sites for free AND most of the time get a seat. With an oyster card it can be even cheaper using buses to get about.
gfplux is correct, for any journey by bus is £2 flat rate, if you use an Oyster card it's 90p and you can go a long way on a bus in the capital for that price.
