You absolutely must do Rome. Its an amazing city. We went for a short break a few years ago and loved it. Especially the ice-cream :tounge:
Sightseeing wasn't too bad either LOL!

We have just (last night) come back from Rome and it was fantastic - even with a 4 year old and an 11 year old. We were there 3 full days and although it was tough (think boot camp/forced march :D ) I managed to ensure that the family saw everything!!
We got cheap flights from Ryan Air so for the 4 of us it was £72 return inc taxes ;) Doubt we could get to London for that

I've been to both many times - inc Venice this year - and love them equally for different reasons.
For a break of 5-7 days I'd pick Rome, purely for the variety of sights to see/things to do. I imagine that the weather that far south is a little more dependable in January than in Venice. If you were only going for 1-2 nights then I might be more inclined towards Venice.
In truth thought, you won't be disappointed with either!!
