I know, I know, where would you start? But I have been looking around and getting totally bewildered :confused2
A few of my family want to go to London at the end of January. We want to be quite central. Places we would be visiting would be Oxford Street, Theatre area and general touristy bits. I would prefer a larger, maybe part of a chain hotel and 3 or 4 stars. It also must be in a well lit busy area near a underground station.

So any suggestions?Anyone been lately? Also any I should give a wide berth? Budget wise we don't want to spend loads, hence I am not looking for five star, but we do want a little more than say a Travellodge type place.

Hope you can help :)

Little Monkey and I stayed in London a few weeks ago on a Theatre Break. We paid £234 each for 2 night accommodation (with buffet breakfast) at the Ramada Hyde Park. This price also included Top Price tickets to see Grease and our rail travel from Exeter.

The hotel was very nice, good location not far from Oxford Street and Theatre Land. There were two Tube Stations very close by (Queensway and Notting Hill Gate) and we felt safe in the area at night.
The room was modern and stylish, flat screen TV, nice powerful shower, iron & board/hairdryer/tea/coffee/mineral water in room etc.

We booked through Holiday Extras.

I have recently also had my attention drawn to a new boutique hotel chain that has opened in the last year. They have very reasonable prices (from £30pn at certain times of the year!) and seem to be centrally located: Hoxton Hotels (google them and you will find).

Hope this helps but I am sure you will get plenty more suggestions.

My in laws just stayed at the Millenium Baileys (http://www.millenniumhotels.co.uk/millenniumkensington/index.html?&cid=nb20882) - it was booked through lastminute.com as one of their top secret hotels, and is directly opposite Gloucester road tube station on the piccadilly line. Think they payed £75 per night, and loved the location, the choice of eateries around the hotel and how clean the hotel was and how good the staff were.

We are staying at www.strandpalacehotel.co.uk in Feb.

Haven't stayed there before, so can't say if it's good or bad, but it's the location which we liked, it's on The Strand so it is walking distance to the theatres, Covent Garden etc. :d:

Thanks for mentioning that, I have told my sister to check it out and get back to me. I think it looks ideal and got a pretty good price too, reckon we will probably book it tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

We've stayed in The Cumberland a couple of times. It's on the corner of Oxford Street and Park Lane, near Marble Arch. We booked through Lastminute.com - one of their secret hotels. Last time we paid £99 per night. It's ultra modern and very quiet considering how big it is. We loved it. There's a tube station next door and it's a good base for Oxford Street shopping. There's a cinema round the corner and lots of restaurants nearby.

The bathroom doors are glass, which is a bit strange, but you can't actually see through them . Otherwise, the rooms are lovely and the beds very comfortable.

Thistle-Marble Arch is great..not too sure of price but I'm put up there by my company when i go to HQ in London & its always full of tourists as well as business people!
Its just off Oxford St, behind the big M&S at Marble Arch.
Breakfast is FAB!!

The hesperia in Victoria is supposed to be great, unfortunately they had no rooms when we went a fortnight ago - we stayed at the Montague on the gardens , it was gorgeous but expensive at £200 a night for b&b for 2. Fabulous location 2 mins away from the british museum. Very cosy and ideal for a romantic getaway, the beds are enormous. £12 for a whisky and a pint of guiness though! :omg:
We stayed in one of the 'Bloomsbury set' rooms.

You won't go far wrong with this little gem :d: - the Royal College of Surgeons on Lincolns Inn Fields:

I'd say that the standard is 3/4 star, but in many respects unique! How many hotels have their own museum (and this one is well worth an hour of your time!).....

Its only available on Friday and Saturday evening - at a cost of £55-£65 per ROOM, not per person. And some of the rooms can take a family. A nice buffet breakfast is included. If they are available ask for one of the flats with views over the park. They have a separate lounge and kitchenette.

Its only a couple of mins walk from Holborn Station, and maybe 5 mins to Covent Garden.

We love Millennium Baileys, stay there a lot when DH is singing at the Albert Hall. We have also used and liked the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum which is also close to Gloucester Road tube and Club Quarters which is close to St Pauls.

Personally I would stay clear of The Strand Palace. I work near it and I have the moisfortune to stay the ocaacional night there after working too late. It is a dingy run down place that is need of a lot of TLC and a good cleaning IMHO - looks nothing like the website pics.

There is a new Cl,ub Quater just opened on Northumberland Avenue which is a few yards from Trafalgar Square and looks nice (it is in a renovated hotel - The Northumberland - which is mentioned in several Sherlock Holmes books/films (inc Hounds of the Baskervilles) hence the Pub of his name opposite. Also just down that road is a Citadines which looks good and ideal for a larger group ie family.

Hope that helps

The best thing about the Strand Palace is it's location, but it is really cramped and felt a bit shabby last time I stayed there, although that was a while ago now.

I would recommend http://www.kingswayhall.co.uk/, we stayed here a couple of months ago a and it was lovely and really well situated. Breakfast was expensive when not included in room rate but we chose to wander into covent garden and eat there anyway.
