I just google for cheap hotels in New York and it breings up lots of sites.
In fact I have just booked the Avalon for next November and even with going through all the sites, the cheapest offer was direct with the hotel.

Just wanted to add that we stayed in The Hotel Edison on W47th street, just off Times Square. It is an art deco hotel, which is quite ok for the regular traveller, although swamped when we went with Christmas Shoppers!!!! We only used it as a place to lay our heads, as we were out all the time and ate elsewhere. This, by the way, is an excellent base area - North for Central Park and Upper West/East side, across a couple of blocks for 5th Avenue and Lexington Avenue and down several blocks for Empire State, Chysler Building, Macy's, and right on Times Square for bus tours and the subway. :wavey:
We've booked the Affinia Dumont, it is an all-suite hotel so plenty of room and a handy kitchen as well. You can see the hotel and check rates at www.affinia.com For a 1 bed suite we are paying under $300 per night for late March. :d: It is in the Top 10 on Trip Advisor, and has great reviews.
Have you thought about an apartment?
I believe Radio City Apartments are quite nice and very close to the Rockerfeller Centre (close to the action!).

thanks guys, i'll check those out
Radio City Apartments get booked up quick, so i'd get in there fast if you want to stay there.
www.quikbook.com is a good site for reasonable rates.
Just back from NY a few weeks ago and stayed at the Tudor Hotel East 42nd St Hotel was great location and very very nice. I looked at a few sites but got a CHEAPER rate booking direct with the hotel and they had Thanksgiving specials on which upgraded me to a better room and included buffet breakfast all for $228 per night. My suggestion is when you search for Hotels on web sites and you find some you like go look at Hotels own site or even e-mail them and ask for a rate, good luck and you will have a fantastic time there :xmassign:

I still go on about the Murray Hill east suites, they are so reasonable, its a bit of a dated hotel but very clean, own kitchen!! and friendly staff local to everything, and the money you save could go on other things, and if you can [ there are waiting lists sometimes] try and get a New York greeter they are so good showing you everything usually on the first day, then you have a better feel for the place to go off on your own, wish I was there now!! only came back three weeks ago!!

Hi,
We came back yesterday from New York. Fantastic trip, recommend it to anyone. We stayed at the Affinia Dumont and paid around $300 per night, great hotel, own kitchenette, nice large room, we were on the 37th floor with a great view. Steps outside the hotel and a look to the left was the Empire State Building!!
